Top US economist lauds Pakistan’s handling of coronavirus pandemic

0

NEW YORK, Oct 19 (APP): A former United States Treasury Secretary and a top economist has praised Pakistan’s strategy to combat the coronavirus pandemic, saying the U.S.would have saved trillions had it followed a similar plan.

Larry Summers, who headed the National Economic Council under former President Barack Obama and was Treasury chief for former President Bill Clinton, made these comments during an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria in the channel’s GPS news programme on Sunday.

“America’s failure on Covid-19 is almost unimaginable,” he said. “Heck, if the US had handled the pandemic as well as Pakistan, we would have saved in neighbourhood of $10 trillion.”

Summers was obviously referring to the policy of “smart lockdown” adopted by Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government policy that helped contain the spread of the deadly virus.

In a tweet aimed at the US government, Summers said, “The costs of an expanded testing system are trivial compared to the costs of tens of thousands of early deaths. Expanding testing should be a matter of utmost urgency.”

He also wrote that “we should be making investments in renewing infrastructure, supporting state & local government and helping the unemployed and lower-income families. It cannot be that the highest priority in the US today is lending money to creditworthy corporations”.

President Donald Trump, despite being a victim of the virus himself, has been playing down the seriousness of the pandemic even as the US death toll topped 200,000.

In September, the World Health Organization (WHO) also appreciated Pakistan’s fight against the coronavirus, saying the country managed to contain the pandemic while allowing its economy to pick up as the country stabilizes.

In an op-ed in The Independent, a British newspaper, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that Pakistan had deployed the infrastructure built over many years for polio to combat Covid-19.

Echoing PM Imran Khan’s policy of balancing life and livelihood, the WHO chief said, “the choice is not between controlling the virus or saving the economy; the two go hand-in-hand”.

“Community health workers who have been trained to go door-to-door vaccinating children against polio have been redeployed and utilised for surveillance, contact tracing and care,” he wrote

By Sohail Ali

LAHORE, Oct 19 (APP): Enthralling cricket action in the just-concluded National T20 Cup First XI tournament had fans and followers of the game glued to their TV and mobile screens.

Numerous interesting numbers came up and records were made over the course of the 33-match tournament that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa won by defeating Southern Punjab by 10 runs in the final.

Pakistan Cricket Board here on Monday made available a statistical review of the tournament provided by Mazhar Arshad.

The highest scoring T20 event in Pakistan,
The overall run-rate in National T20 Cup 2020 this year was 8.93 making it the highest scoring T20 tournament in Pakistan. The National T20 Cups in 2017 and 2019 both recorded 8.34, the previous highest figure.

In 33 matches this year, there were 15 totals of 200-plus, including 206-4 by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the final against Southern Punjab.

It was only the second time that the 200-barrier was crossed in the final of a National T20 Cup. The first such instance being in 2010 when Lahore Lions posted 221 for three against Karachi Dolphins at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

The run-rate this year in all T20s played in Pakistan, including a T20I series involving Bangladesh, the MCC tour, PSL and the National T20 Cup has been 8.72 – the highest ever in a calendar year.

The previous best year in Pakistan in terms of scoring rate was 2019, when the run-rate was 8.46.

Best Batsman and Best Bowler:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Fakhar Zaman, with 420 runs, and Shaheen Afridi, with 20 wickets, were tournament’s best batsman and bowler.

Fakhar’s tally of 420 runs is the second highest in one edition of the National T20 Cup and only 12 behind Kamran Akmal, who accumulated 432 runs for Lahore Whites in the 2017 edition.

Fakhar scored five fifties, including 67 off 40 balls in the final.

Shaheen’s 20 scalps are joint-most along with Saeed Ajmal, who took 20 wickets in the 2016 edition. No fast bowler before Shaheen had taken this many wickets in a single edition of the tournament.

The left-arm quick took 13 wickets in the power-play overs, which is by far the most by any bowler. He struck in his opening spell in nine out of 10 games.

There is no bowler in the world who has more T20 wickets than Shaheen (44) this year.

The fastest hundred:

There were some extraordinary performances from the young talented cricketers in the National T20 Cup for First XIs.

One of the highlights of the tournament was Khushdil Shah’s 100 off 35 balls for Southern Punjab in a 217-run chase against Sindh. It went down as the fastest T20 hundred scored by a batsman from Pakistan, beating Ahmed Shehzad’s 40-ball effort for Barisal Burners in the Bangladesh Premier League in 2012.

The previous fastest 100 recorded on Pakistan soil was Bilal Asif’s 43-ball century on T20 debut for Sialkot Stallions against Abbottabad Falcons in Faisalabad in 2015.

Only four batsmen in the world – Andrew Symonds (34 balls), Wihan Lubbe (33), Rishabh Pant (32) and Chris Gayle (30) – have scored a century in fewer balls in T20 cricket than Khushdil.

Big-hits galore:

Khushdil’s strike-rate in the tournament was 177.45 – the highest among batsmen with at least 200 runs.

His 25 sixes were the most by any batsman.

The tournament had nine batsmen, the most in any edition of National T20 Cup, who scored more than 200 runs at a strike-rate of 150-plus.

Prior to this tournament, the maximum number of batsmen with 200-plus runs and 150-plus strike-rate in one edition of National T20 Cup was only four (in three different tournaments in 2005, 2015 and 2017).

Second fastest scoring innings:

In the last group match, Southern Punjab needed to chase 162 in 12.3 overs against Balochistan to quality for the semi-finals.

They ended the innings with 166 for three in 10.4 overs at a run-rate of 15.56, the second highest in T20 history where at least ten overs were bowled.

Brisbane Heat (15.80) is the only team that has maintained a higher run-rate in a T20 innings of more than 10 overs.

Akin to Southern Punjab, Heat were also playing for a better run-rate when they put 158 for none in 10 overs against Melbourne Stars in Big Bash League in 2019.

0

ATTOCK, Oct 19 (APP):Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam on Monday said that Pakistan was ranked fifth on the index of climate change that was why the government had evolved multiple strategy to tackle the effects of natural disasters.

Talking to newsmen at Hassanabdal, he said that present government was taking tangible steps as per PM’s vision to reduce effects of climate change on the vulnerable communities.
He added that government had a distinction to have included the element of disaster risk reduction in the planning of development projects for the first time in the history of the county. Commenting on question related to recent political developments, the PM’s special assistant Malik Amin said that the opposition’s anti government public rallies posed no threat to the government and it had launched an anti-government campaign to hide its corruption.

However, alarming thing is the stance of the PML-N leadership against the state institutions which was against the largest interest of the state and its institutions.

He said that Pakistan Muslim League-N and Pakistan Peoples Party was lacking leadership that was why they were using each others shoulders to save their money earned through corrupt practices. He said the opposition did not have a direction or plan and their viewpoint was the same.

He said the government will complete five years while there were no chance of

AJK President calls for tripartite talks on Kashmir issue under UN supervision

0

MIRPUR (AJK): Oct 19 (APP):Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Sardar Masood Khan Monday said that as a matter of principle, talks with India should be held only under the UN auspices, and side by side with Pakistan and India, presence of the Kashmiris on the negotiations table is a must.

He asserted that the UN supervision of the talks is essential in order to carry forward and implement the Security Council resolutions on Kashmir.

In an interview with a private TV channel on Monday he said that India had always used the bogey of bilateral talks to consolidate its illegal occupation of Kashmir and to keep the United Nations and the Kashmiris out of the negotiation process, and now it can once again use the talks as a ploy to divert attention from its recent illegal actions in IIOJK, AJK President office said on Monday

The AJK President maintained that since the Kashmir issue has been once again raised in the UN Security Council, the talks as a matter of principle should be held in not Islamabad or New Delhi, but in New York. However, to ensure participation of Kashmiris, these can also be conducted in Islamabad, New Delhi or Muzaffarabad and Srinagar.

In any case, we will have to ensure that the talks are held within the framework of the UN Security Council resolutions on Kashmir only, he asserted.

Responding to a question, he said that Pakistan’s stand on talks is very clear that Kashmir is not a bilateral dispute between Pakistan and India but it is an international issue which must be resolved by the UN Security Council. However, India does not consider it even a bilateral issue and describes it as its internal matter.

He said that India will also not accept Pakistan’s condition of involvement of Kashmiris in the talks process.

“Pakistan has always adopted the stand that the Kashmiri people themselves are to decide their future destiny as has been laid down in the UN resolution”, he said adding that the Kashmir issue must remain with the international community so as to prevent India from turning occupied Kashmir into its colony, and stop it from depriving the Kashmiri people of their land and homes.

Answering another question, Sardar Masood Khan said that the Pakistani and the Kashmiri community living across the world including Pakistan and Azad Kashmir should rise up, and established contacts with the international community on the political level to muster their support in order to stop India from the illegal process of demographic change in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Yet to another question about anti-India stance recently adopted by pro-India Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, the AJK president said that these elements have never been Kashmiri leaders, but these were the people who had sold Kashmir to India in the lust of power, and after they have lost power and privileges, they wanted to strike some deal with India through blackmailing.

0

ISLAMABAD, Oct 19 (APP):Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood Monday said that cracks may appear both in PML-N and PPP due to difference of opinions and conflict of interests among their leaders and workers.

The minister said both Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Marryam Nawaz have set new tradition first ever in the political history of the country by following a path
of maligning the national institutions, merely to hide their corrupt political track record.

In a talk show programme of a private news channel on Sunday, he said that the excitement of people was evident at PTI’s rallies whereas people from remote villages were forcibly brought to the PDM’s flop show against their willingness.
