MSEC holds dinner to brought energy experts together

0
ISLAMABAD, Feb 22 (APP):To mark the culmination of MSEC’s second fellowship cohort, a high-level Networking Dinner was held on Friday, in Islamabad, brought together Pakistan’s leading energy experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to connect with the next generation of energy and climate professionals.
At the event, Zeeshan Ashfaq, CEO of Renewables First, emphasized the broader vision of energy transition, highlighting that it is not just about replacing fossil fuels with renewables, but about building the right people to lead the transition, said a press release.
“The energy transition isn’t just about swapping coal for the sun or wind for oil – it’s about empowering the next generation to lead the charge,” Ashfaq said. “At the Margalla School, we are not just teaching energy; we are shaping the leaders who will define its future. The challenges ahead are big, but so is the ambition of these young professionals. To them, I say – BRING IT ON!”
MSEC’s fellowship program ensures that young professionals are not only educated in renewable energy policy but also equipped with practical expertise in power systems, climate finance, and energy market dynamics. This initiative fills a critical gap in Pakistan’s workforce by offering hands-on experience and industry engagement.
The transition to renewable energy is not just a policy shift – it requires strong industry alignment to ensure a smooth and sustainable transition. Aisha Moriani, Additional Secretary In-charge, Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, underscored the importance of energy efficiency and climate-aligned strategies.
“Pakistan faces huge implications of climate change, so we must adopt both adaptation and mitigation strategies,” Moriani said. “It’s crucial that our industry aligns with these efforts, adopting energy-efficient approaches that reduce emissions and enhance sustainability.”
She further noted that the Ministry of Energy has launched several initiatives to support green skills development, ensuring that Pakistan’s workforce is equipped to meet the demands of a low-carbon economy.
“Another very important source of emissions is transport,” Moriani added. “One of Pakistan’s commitments under international climate agreements is that by 2030, 30% of our new vehicles will be electric. Keeping that in view, we have developed an EV policy to accelerate this transition.”
Despite Pakistan’s ambitious renewable energy targets, power market reforms, and climate adaptation policies, the country’s education system has failed to keep pace. Graduates entering the energy sector lack a fundamental understanding of power markets, grid dynamics, and policy implementation – critical areas that impact the success of Pakistan’s clean energy transition.
“Pakistan should be at the forefront of climate action. It’s a country of 240 million people – for us, climate change is not just numbers, it’s actually lives at stake,” said Muhammad Mustafa Amjad, Program Director at Renewables First. “The gap between academic knowledge and practical industry expertise is a major roadblock. Through MSEC, we are equipping young professionals with the tools they need to drive real, transformative change in the sector.”
The MSEC fellowship includes rigorous training, mentorship, and project-based learning designed to bridge the gap between theory and implementation. By engaging directly with experts in power systems planning, grid modernization, and market reform, fellows gain hands-on experience that prepares them to address real-world energy challenges.
One of the key takeaways from the event was the importance of policy, infrastructure, and market reforms working in tandem. As Pakistan moves towards a competitive electricity market, the challenges of grid modernization, market access, and regulatory transparency must be addressed.
The MSEC Networking Dinner was more than a closing event – it was a call to action. As Pakistan faces rising energy costs, grid instability, and climate risks, the need for a skilled, informed workforce has never been greater.
Margalla School on Energy and Climate is Pakistan’s first dedicated platform to train professionals in energy systems, climate resilience, and the complexities of the power sector.
An initiative of Renewables First, MSEC is committed to developing practical expertise rather than just theoretical knowledge – ensuring that Pakistan’s energy transition is not just policy-driven, but led by capable professionals who understand its real-world challenges.

KARACHI, Feb 22 (APP):The Hamdard University (HU) awarded degrees and certificates to 1,718 students and scholars at its 27th Convocation that was held on Saturday at its main Madinat al-Hikmah campus.
Of the over 1,700 awardees, seven scholars were given PhDs and 130 MS, ME, and MPhil degrees. The ceremony was presided over by HU’s Chancellor Sadia Rashid and former federal minister and senator Javed Jabbar was the chief guest.
In recognition of their excellent performance in various courses of studies, gold medals were conferred on about 40 students. The best teacher award was conferred on Prof Dr Syed Mohammad Mubin and that of best researcher on Hafiz Imran Nawaz.
Vice Chancellor Syed Shabib-ul-Hasan pointed out that during this convocation more graduates are being awarded degrees than ever before. The reason obviously lies in the growth in number of students who are being admitted to HU each year.
In 2024 alone, the university admitted over 3,200 students, which shows the university’s growing popularity among students as well as their parents. The student population has now risen to 10,000.
Prof Dr Shabib-ul-Hasan said his university is offering more than 100 programmes that are being run by seven faculties as per the guidelines provided by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and other professional and regulatory bodies.
He said that in 2024 the faculty members of the university produced 294 research papers that were published in peer-reviewed journals recognised by the HEC. In the last five years the total number of such papers has topped 1,000.
The Faculty of Engineering, Sciences and Technology has set up a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Laboratory which is equipped with the latest technology, he said. In the last financial year, the university provided concessions/scholarships worth Rs159 million among hundreds of meritorious students.
The 1,700 students that are passing out now will join the 36,000 alumni of the university, who are already working in various capacities both nationally and internationally.
Chancellor Sadia Rashid said that after graduating from the university the new alumni would not just face challenges but opportunities as well. “Please keep in mind that you should never fail to grasp the opportunities and at the same time meet the challenges with confidence,” she remarked.
She urged the graduating students to renew their commitment towards serving the nation as per the vision of Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, the founder of HU.
In his extempore speech, former federal minister, author, and well-known media personality Javed Jabbar recalled with fondness his association with Hakim Said. He said on various occasions the founder chancellor of HU visited parts of interior Sindh on his invitation.
Praising the performance of HU in the field of research, the retired senator said that unlike most universities that retreat into their shells, Hamdard’s research projects have a lot of relevance for the wider world.
Jabbar was of the opinion that HU’s graduates and alumni should count themselves as extremely fortunate because they have received higher education, that too at an institution like Hamdard.
He urged the graduates to forge ahead in life with confidence.

Pakistan’s Champions Trophy next round qualification chances ‘on the line’

0
LAHORE, Feb 22 (APP):With Pakistan due to play against arch-rivals India in their second match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai Cricket stadium on Sunday (tomorrow), the Green Shirts must win against India otherwise the chances of Pakistan’s qualification to the next round are on the line.
Having lost to New Zealand by 60 runs in the tournament opener at the National Stadium, Karachi, Pakistan cricket team must earn a win against India to keep their chances alive of staying relevant in the Champions Trophy otherwise they face an early exit.
Pakistan are languishing at the bottom of the points table behind Bangladesh on lower net run rate (NRR) with no points while New Zealand sit top of the table over India with a better NRR and two points from one match.
Pakistan’s campaign for the ICC Champions Trophy faced early set-back when in-form opening batter Saim Ayub was ruled out due to ankle injury while Fakhar Zaman’s muscular sprain further dented the chances. Fakhar Zaman’s batting was hampered by injury and Pakistan could not chase the target.
On the other hand, Indian cricket team is in red-hot form and overcame England 3-0 in the white-ball series in India last month as part of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy preparations. Shubman Gill was the player of series with 259 runs in three matches and hit one hundred and two 50s in the series. Shubman Gill was also player of the match in India’s first match of the ICC Champions Trophy as he scored 101 not out against Bangladesh.
India are without the services of their match-winner Jasprit Bumrah but Mohammad Shami has returned to the international cricket with a five wicket haul against Bangladesh while the rookie pacer Harshit Rana is firing on all cylinders.
Pakistan are under pressure to win while they will further be tested by the presence of a huge Indian fan support at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS) but the mettle of individuals and team is tested under pressure. A Pakistan-India contest provides the right platform to test one’s skills.
A Pakistan-India match also provided an opportunity to the cricketers to become a hero overnight. Score a big hundred or give a commanding bowling performance and become a hero for eternity. Who knows Babar Azam, Salman Agha can etch their names in the minds of the cricket fans through a scintillating performance or Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf or Naseem Shah can turn the tables on India.
It is do or die situation for Pakistan and they must win their last two group A matches with big margins to keep their chances of playing the second semi-final of the Champions Trophy at the iconic Gaddafi stadium. In case Pakistan lose against India, it is not only the Champions Trophy title but position of many players is on the line.
