Rs 2105 billion collected during last 9 months: Senate Committee told

ISLAMABAD, Apr 12 (APP): Senate Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs here on Tuesday was informed that about Rs 2105 billion revenue was collected during last nine moths of current fiscal year (2015 16).

The committee which met here with Senator Saleem H. Mandivawla in chair was also apprised that every individual tax payer was paying average Rs 18,000 tax.

It was also informed that about one million filers were filing their returns and Federal Board of Revenue was making all out efforts for broadening the tax base.

To a question, he said it was necessary to give democracy

SECP registers 4,355 new companies in first nine months of current FY

ISLAMABAD, April 12 (APP): During the first nine months of current fiscal year (2015 16), Securities Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) registered 4,355 new companies.

“As compared to the corresponding period last year, it represents a growth of 21 percent,” a statement issued by the Commission here said.

The SECP statement further said that it is a clear sign of confidence by investors and a growing trend in company registration.

ISLAMABAD, Apr 12 (APP): The economic growth in Pakistan is projected to accelerate from 4.5% in 2016 to 4.8% in 2017, says a Wold Bank Report.

The growth would be supported by growing industry and services and greater investment as well as buoyed by low oil prices and substantial remittances.

According to WB South Asia Economic Focus, sustained and
inclusive growth with further acceleration will require tackling pervasive power cuts, a cumbersome business environment, and low access to finance through the successful

ISLAMABAD, Apr 12 (APP): Aggrieved at the current state of affairs of Pakistan cricket, erstwhile quickie Muhammad Zahid feels former national stars should come forward to rescue the game in the country.

Zahid said the ex-cricketers should go to smaller cities and train young players. Speaking about the coach for the national team, Zahid said Dean Jones’s name has been floating around for the job but I don’t think he has the ability to manage Pakistan cricket.

“I know the names of Aaqib Javed and Mohsin Khan have been mentioned but my opinion is that many ex-players feel that if they hang-around long enough, they will be able to get a cushy job with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as a coach for the national team.

ISLAMABAD, Apr 12 (APP): Commander 10 Corps Lieutenant General, Malik Zafar Iqbal Tuesday visited rain and landslide affected areas of Gilgit Baltistan (GB)and presented donation of five truck-load of food items by Pakistan Army to the Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan.

A high level meeting to overview the losses occurred following recent heavy rains and landslides in the area was held at Gilgit, an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) news update here stated.  The meeting reviewed relief activities in detail.

The moot attended by the provincial Chief Minister, Governor, Corps Commander, Chief Secretary GB, Commander FCNA and IG Police GB discussed issues of food shortage, blockage of important road links including Karakoram highway and future strategy.

ISLAMABAD, Apr 12 (APP): Minister of State for Capital Administration and Development Division Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary Tuesday said that government was working on improving standard of education.

Addressing a workshop for training of Master Trainers on Assessment as a chief guest organized by the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Islamabad (FBISE), the minister said that Prime Minister, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was paying special attention to promote education sector.

He said that educational institutions of the Federal Capital were being developed as a role model for the entire country following vision of the prime minister.

MULTAN, April 12 (APP): Agriculture department Tuesday advised farmers to complete sowing of Bt varieties of cotton from April 15 to May 15 to get good yields.

Farmers should select Bt cotton varieties while keeping in view its suitability with regard to area,local information and last few years experience,officials said in a statement issued by media liaison unit of Punjab Agriculture department.

Officials said that farmers should only sow the registered and approved varieties,preferably those certified by Punjab Seed Corporation and seed developed by companies approved by Federal Seed Certification department.

Finance Minister cancels Washington visit

ISLAMABAD, Apr 12 (APP): The Finance Minister, Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar Tuesday cancelled his visit to Washington in view of the Prime Minister’s programme to proceed to United Kingdom for medical checkup.

The finance Minister was scheduled to visit Washington to attend International Monetary Fund and World Bank Spring meetings to be held from April 14 to April 17, 2016.

Now, the delegation comprising Governor State Bank of Pakistan, Finance Secretary and Secretary Economic Affairs Division will represent the country in these meetings, according to Finance Ministry statement.

ISLAMABAD, Apr 12 (APP): The Pakistan Business Council (PBC) has recommended the government to tax all the income irrespective of sources to boost revenues and create fiscal space for implementing socio-economic development.

In its budget proposals submitted to the Finance Minister, Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar for the fiscal year 2016-17, the representative body (PBC) of about 50 largest private-sector businesses said that the government cannot create fiscal space for implementing its ambitious socio-economic agenda just by increasing taxes on the already taxed sectors of the economy.

The body welcomed the efforts of the Finance Minister for increasing the taxpayer base. It also supported the distinction introduced between filers and non-filers of tax returns, however emphasized that much more needs to be done.

NDMA dispatches wheat, milk to GB landslide affectees

ISLAMABAD, April 12 (APP): National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday dispatched five tons of wheat flour and 480 kg of milk powder for children of Gilgit-Baltistan landslide affectees through C-130 plane.

About road situation, the NDMA said that recent heavy rain in parts of Northern Areas and Gilgit Baltistan, National Highway Network including N-15, N-35 (KKH), S-1 has been damaged due to landslide and mud flow.

Taking cognizance of the facts, National Highway Authority has taken all necessary measures to ensure repair works.

Displaced Palestinian families in Gaza live in desperate conditions: UN

UNITED NATIONS, April 12 (APP): More than 75,000 Palestinian families internally displaced in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israeli attacks in 2014 continue to live in fraught conditions and are in need of homes, the United Nations relief coordination wing for the Occupied Palestinian Territory reported Tuesday.

In a press release, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian  Affairs (OCHA) said it conducted an ‘unprecedented profiling exercise’ of Palestinian families internally displaced in the Gaza Strip.

“After hearing from over 16,000 displaced families in the Gaza Strip,  it is clear that most continue to live in desperate conditions,” Robert Piper, the UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Development Activities for the occupied Palestinian territory, said.”International support to end this situation is urgently needed,” he said.
