India needs to develop coherence on peace process with Pakistan: Masood Khan

0

ISLAMABAD, Jun 28 (APP): If India is serious in peace with Pakistan, it can initiate the dialogue process right away, as a democratically elected government is in place in Pakistan capable of taking all decisions, former ambassador Masood Khan said Tuesday.

The diplomat’s statement came in response to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who in an interview with local television said that it was hard to decide to whom to talk about peace in Islamabad – whether to the democratically elected government or the ‘other actors’.

“Mr. Modi knows that Pakistan’s Prime Minister is one call away. If he gets in touch with him, the dialogue process can start right away. He need not look for other ‘actors’,” Masood Khan told APP.

Masood Khan, who has served as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the Untied Nations said India’s interlocutors in Islamabad are well known – Advisor on Foreign Affairs and National Security Advisor.

“For peace, engagement is necessary and the political leadership’s brief includes inputs from all ‘actors’ – by which he alludes to the armed forces of Pakistan,” he said.

“Pakistan has one brief, not a split one. India, for its part, should try to develop a coherent and cohesive response on India-Pakistan agenda,” the diplomat said.

Banks asked to furnish proposals for transactions with Iran

0

ISLAMABAD, June 28 (APP): Minister for Commerce, Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan Tuesday directed the representatives of banks to furnish viable proposals for the facilitation of banking transactions for trade with Iran within a month.

The Minister was chairing a meeting with State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and private banks for exploring the banking channels available for trade with post-sanction Iran.

The Minister said that Pakistan is searching for ways and means to initiate trade with Iran in a big way despite the fact that several impediments persists after the lifting of sanctions from Iran.

The meeting was informed that despite lifting international sanctions from Iran, private banks are reluctant to establish direct banking channels with Iran.

The absence of banking links, because of the refusal of international banks to support transactions with Iran, is the prime reason that Pakistan’s trade with Iran did not boost up as expected.

Representatives of Pakistani private banks visited Iran few months ago and report a great enthusiasm in Iran regarding trade with Pakistan.

SBP and Central Bank of Iran signed a Letter of Intent on the occasion of visit of Iranian President to Pakistan for enhancing mutual cooperation and establishing direct banking links.

Pakistani traders would have great opportunities of export right next door with minimal transportation cost, especially that of Basmati rice which used to fetch millions of dollars from the pre-sanction Iran.

Pak-Iran trade which was over one billion dollars now stands at US $ 270 million because of the international sanctions.

Ministry of Commerce is extensively engaged with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Agriculture of Iran to operationalize the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) and enhance trade facilitation at the border.

The Minister recently visited Pak-Iran border at Taftan and inspected the facilities available for smooth movement of vehicles trading across the border and promised to upgrade the infrastructure.

As per the 5-Years Economic Engagement Plan agreed between Pakistan and Iran, the Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan has forwarded the draft FTA framework agreement to Iran this month. The response of Iran is awaited on this.

Pakistan’s foreign policy on right track: Analysts

0

ISLAMABAD, June 28 (APP): A number of prominent diplomatic analysts Tuesday termed the government’s foreign policy as highly successful because its main contours focussing on vast regional connectivity through economic prosperity has drawn encouraging response among the comity of nations.

They also completely rejected the perception by certain quarters about Pakistan’s isolation on the global scene because through aggressive foreign policy, Pakistan had very effectively presented its viewpoint on various issues at the world leading fora, drawing global accolades.

Talking to APP, former foreign secretary Najmuddin Shaikh said maintaining good relations with neighbours had always been the core ingredient of Pakistan’s foreign policy.

Pakistan had attended various world fora which reflected the effectiveness of its foreign policy, he added.

To a question, he replied that there was need to strengthen border management with Afghanistan as it was used by a large number of inhabitants on both sides of the border.

He said peace in Afghanistan was vital for the whole region and Pakistan was playing its role as facilitator for dialogue process to bring about stability in the war torn country.

About the issue of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Sheikh opined that any discrimination against Pakistan would not be accepted as the country possessed full credentials to be included in the elite Group.

He said Pakistan’s desire for good relations with its neighbours should be reciprocated with the same spirit.

Rustam Shah Mohmmand, former ambassador, maintained that effective border management between Pakistan and Afghanistan was required due to security reasons.

He stressed that besides Chaman and Torkham borders, checking at other border crossing points should also be enhanced and upgraded.

The former diplomat said under the fast changing global scenes, countries were realigning their positions and under such circumstances, China was emerging as a power in the region.

China had invested 46$ billion through China Pakistan Economic Corridor which would be a game changer in the whole region, he added.

Mushtaq Mehar, another notable analyst, replied that Pakistan’s foreign policy was advancing on the right track.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif’s hard work was paying dividends and the main drivers of the foreign policy including larger regional connectivity and economic prosperity had proved successful, Mehar opined.

He termed it as a right decision to increase border management between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He stressed for maintaining soft delicacy in Pakistan’s relations with India.

Former ambassador Masood Khan said success of the country’s foreign policy could be gauged over strong diplomacy related to the membership of the NSG and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
