Pervaiz Rashid condoles with Altaf Qureshi

ISLAMABAD, July 16 (APP): Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid Saturday said Turkey has become the first Muslim country that has foiled martial law attempt with the help and support of the people and it was made possible due to democracy.

Thwarting the military coup with the power of the masses is
also good gesture for all Islamic countries and Turkey deserve congratulations for this, he said talking to PTV.

He commended the people of Turkey for thwarting the military coup attempt and protecting the democratic system.

The minister said people of Turkey deserve congratulations
from muslim countries including Pakistan and all other countries of the world who support democracy.

He said democracy has delivered in Pakistan but
unfortunately military regimes ruled for about 40 years of the country causing huge damage to the country.

Democratic government gave constitution to the country, he
said adding constitution that represents integrity and unity of
the federation.

He said it was democratic government which took bold
initiatives and played leading role to root out terrorism from the country.

People across the world also want to bring change through
the power of vote after the elected governments complete their term, he said adding that change by the power of gun has been rejected by the people of Turkey.

He said continuity of the democratic system was needed to
strengthen democracy and foil attempts to impose martial law.

Democratic struggle is at initial stages in many countries.
Turkish nation has set an example by foiling martial law
attempt and it is an act to be liked and followed, Pervaiz said.

The minister said every country has the right to devise
foreign policy in its national interest and it should consist of
internal interests of the country which include peace, development and prosperity.

Pakistan was divided during military rule, terrorism and
energy crises in the country were also result of dictatorship, he said.

Pervaiz Rashid said that international organizations are
acknowledging today that Pakistan’s economy is speedily
progressing and country’s reserves have touched record level of $23 billion.

He said energy projects have been started by the democratic government to fulfil energy demands. Mega investment of $46 billion under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was also fruit of democracy in the country.

He said there are political parties in Pakistan which have
sacrificed to strengthen democracy in the country.

During PTI and PAT stage in at D-chowk, they attempted to
attack Parliament House and other state organizations. All
political parties got united in the Parliament and foiled their
attempt to derail democracy, he recalled.

The minister said difference of opinion is considered beauty
of the democracy and it is democracy which grants this right to the people.

He said all political parties and the masses are united when
it comes to safeguard democracy in the country as both have passed through may phases to strengthen democracy.

Pervaiz said people are well aware of the damages done by
the military rules and there is nobody in the country who support dictators.

However, he said, there could be some elements who support dictatorship like those who attempted to take over the government in Turkey.

The minister said morale of democratic forces would be
boosted after seeing bravery of Turkish people.

He said spirit of the Turkish people is applaudable as they
came to streets on the call of their leader and gave sacrifice of their lives to save democracy.

When PTI had organised a sit-in at D-chowk, routine life
was running as normal in the country and even in Islamabad city because people of Pakistan were not interested in doing politics of sit ins and conspiracies and damage to democracy, he said.

He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sent to exile by a
military ruler but when he returned, the masses once again elected him to serve. People of Pakistan are united for democracy in Pakistan, he added.

There is a lot of change in Pakistan as compared to the
situation in 2013 when we came into power, he said adding that a number of steps were taken by the government under leadership of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif that have put the country on track to progress and prosperity.

SBP to issue Rs 50 coin in memory of late Edhi

0

ISLAMABAD, Jul 16 (APP): The State Bank of Pakistan would issue a commemorative coin of Rs. 50 in memory of late Abdul Sattar Edhi as a small token of appreciation to remember him in the history of Pakistan.

SBP Ashraf Mahmood Wathra announced this while addressing to a `condolence’ gathering to pay tributes to late Abdul Sattar Edhi who served the needy, the orphans, the widows and the destitute by rising above the considerations of caste, color and creed.

The event was attended by senior management of the bank, son of late Abdul Sattar Edhi Faisal Edhi, representatives of financial sector, philanthropists and notables of the society, said SBP statement.

Paying tributes to late Abdul Sattar Edhi Governor State Bank said social welfare is no ordinary feat nor it is impossible to achieve. He said developing countries generally face lack of welfare facilities and private sector in such countries fills the void.

He complemented late Abdul Sattar Edhi for being among the first ones to come forward for the cause of humanity in the country.

Governor further added, “though there is no dearth of welfare organizations in this country but late Edhi stands apart with the rest of organizations as he did not seek elaborate gatherings for fund raising, rather he depended upon common people of Pakistan for this purpose”.
He went on to add that this approach is symbolic of the philosophy of `help yourself’ and understanding pain and anguish of each other.

Governor recalled that services rendered by Edhi have been recognized locally as well as internationally. He felt proud of being a member of Jinnah Society when it conferred upon an award to Edhi for his outstanding services.

He urged upon the members of financial services, presidents of commercial banks and other high ranking officials present there to come forward and fully cooperate with Edhi Foundation and other social welfare organizations under Corporate Social Responsibility thus enabling them to continue the work of social welfare.

Liaquat Merchant, President, Jinnah Society while recounting services of Edhi Sahab said he was at the forefront to serve humanity in any eventuality. He added that late Edhi was legend in his life time and perhaps people like him born in 100 years time.

Chairman, Pakistan Banks Association, Aftab Manzoor called late Edhi as the greatest humanitarian and beacon of hope in face of every distress and calamity. He prayed Allah to grant him the highest place in Jannah.

At the end, son of late Abdul Sattar Edhi, Faisal Edhi said though Edhi Sahab has gone but his memories and mission is with us. He said the love extended by people from
everywhere to us this time has no example and prayed that this love and prayers remain with them for the successful achievement of the mission of Edhi Sahab.

Faisal Edhi recounted that recently Sikhs, Christians, Hindus as well as Muslims belonging to various sects were present at the residence/office of late Edhi and all of them prayed together for his magfirat and success of his mission and said that after seeing them I am sure that his mission cannot be stopped.

Faisal Edhi requested the public to donate Rs1 each to acquire 100 large ambulances because the existing fleet of ambulances is consisting of old and small ambulances and in case of any catastrophe they would be unable to serve the humanity adequately.

He said he will start this mission of resource generation from Quaid’s mausoleum soon and come to the common men. He also requested the public to start donating their body organ and participate in a scheme being launched by SIUT.

Pakistan not to tolerate Indian brutalities in Kashmir: Kirmani

0

HAJEERA (AJK), July 16 (APP): Advisor to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Dr Asif Kirmani Saturday said Pakistan would not tolerate brutalities of the Modi government and killings of the Kshmiris and observe Black Day on July 20 against the barbarity of its army.

Addressing a public meeting here, he said a few days back
across the Line of Control the rogue Indian army martyred about 40 brave, honourable and courageous freedom loving Kashmiris.

“I want to tell the Modi government that they martyred Burhan Wani but now from every house of Kashmir a Burhan Wani will emerge.

We will not tolerate the violence of Indian government.”
He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the killings of Kashmiris and instructed the representative of Pakistan at the United Nations to raise the issue of Indian oppression in held Kashmir.

He said the Prime Minister chaired a special cabinet meeting
on the issue of atrocities against the Kashmiris. Pictures of
situation in Kashmir were shown in the meeting and everybody was grieved, he added.

He said the Prime Minister instructed the Foreign Office
to raise the issue in all the world capitals and the United Nations, with the message that Pakistanis would not tolerate the killing of Kashmiris.

The Advisor said on Friday protest demonstrations were held
across Pakistan to mark the Day of Condemnation against the brutalities being perpetrated by rogue Indian army in Kashmir.

On Monday, he said, the Day of Accession of Kashmir to
Pakistan would be observed while on Tuesday Black Day would be marked to protest against the rogue army of India.
On these days, Pakistanis would protest against the oppression and brutality of India, he added.

“The rogue Indian army is continuing to spill blood of our
Kashmiri brothers.”

The Advisor said hundreds of thousands of Kashmiris had been killed and the day was not far off when the people of Kashmir would see the morning of freedom.

“India cannot stop the freedom movement of Kashmir.”
Kirmani said Kashmir, which was an international issue, was made a bilateral issue with India during the period of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who claimed to fight with India for 1000 years.

Before coming to Kashmir, Bilawal Bhutto should first get
knowledge of the history of the region, he added.

He said the Abdul Majeed government had nothing to show for its performance in five years as the PPP did nothing to bring change in the lives of the people.

“Vote is a trust and democracy is a system under which the
government brings progress and prosperity,” he said adding the leaders of sitting government of PPP only filled their coffers.

Every penny of the government kitty was right of the Kashmiris, he added.

He said Rs 30 billion was given by the federal government during last three years for all districts of AJK but the amount was siphoned off by the PPP government.

He said the PML-N after forming its government would create economic and investment opportunities in Azad Kashmir.

He said Nawaz Sharif would build a prosperous Azad Kashmir as per his vision.

Nawaz Sharif made the Kashmir issue prominent and highlighted it at the United Nations and became its advocate, he added.

“We will give back rights to the Kashmiris and spend on
progress and prosperity of Kashmir.”

He said the politics of PPP was taking its last breath and
after success of PML-N in polls, its politics would sink and
Abdul Majeed government would fall.

He urged the party supporters to follow Nawaz’s message of
peace and avoid getting provoked by the Abdul Majeed government which had turned violent.

The federal ministers, he said, were threatened of dire
consequences when they came to Kashmir and violence was committed against the PML-N workers in Bagh, Nakial and two of its workers were killed.

PML-N candidate Chaudhry Aziz was injured with bullets, he
added.

He said on one side Abdul Majeed was killing the PML-N workers and on the other Modi was killing people in held Kashmir.

“We do not believe in violence,” he said. “We do not
accept the fake inquiry against the killings of PMLN workers.”

Kirmani said PTI chief Imran Khan had stopped progress of
Pakistan for six months while standing on a container so he could be a well-wisher of Kashmiris as well.

He said urged the Kashmiris to vote for PML-N on July 21.

After the victory in election, he said, “I will invite you to
the Kohala Bridge and we will enter the Prime Minister House in Muzaffarabad with a victory rally and we will install a worker of Nawaz Sharif as Prime Minister.”

Kashmir issue being vociferously raised at world fora: Maleeha

0

ISLAMABAD, July 16 (APP): Pakistan Ambassador to the
United Nations Dr Maleeha Lodhi Saturday said Pakistan was very firmly raising the grave human rights violations in the Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK).

It was urging the world community to play its role for
the earliest resolution of the Kashmir issue in line with the
wishes of the Kashmiri people and the UN resolutions, she added.

Maleeha Lodhi, in a private news channel programme, said
the recent wave of suppression and aggression by the Indian
occupational forces in the valley was an illegitimate attempt
to quell Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

Despite Indian atrocities, she said, the Kashmiri people
were determined to continue their struggle for freedom and had been waging the struggle against the foreign forces in the last 70 years.

Maleeha said implementation of the UN resolutions was
the only way to solve the long-standing issue.

She said under the direction of the Prime Minister, the
international community at the United Nations was being kept abreast with the latest situation in the IOK.

The ongoing Indian atrocities were alarming for the
whole region, she said, adding that she also conveyed to the
UN General Secretary, Pakistan’s serious concern over the
human rights violations in the IOK.

India was being pressurized to resolve the issue through
effective diplomacy at the international fora, she added.

Maleeha lamented that India was neither ready to talk to
Pakistan over the issue nor was serious in implementing the UN resolutions.

India even did not respond to the UN Secretary General’s
offer to mediate over the issue, she added.

To a query, she said Pakistan would continue its diplomatic
and moral support to the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination and just cause for freedom.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN said India was levelling
false allegations to divert attention from the grave situation
in the IOK, but it would have to come to the table for the
peaceful resolution of the issue.

She said Pakistan’s role against terrorism was also
lauded at the world fora and the international community
acknowledged its sacrifices.

Estimated 263 million children, youth now out of school: UN

0

UNITED NATIONS, July 16 (APP): The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reported Friday that some 263 million children and youth, equivalent to about a quarter of the population of Europe, are out of school from primary to upper secondary levels with sub-Saharan Africa having the highest rates of exclusion.

“Countries have promised to provide every child with a primary and secondary education by 2030. These new findings show the hard work ahead  if we are to reach this goal,” UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said.

“Our focus must be on inclusion from the earliest age and right through the learning cycle, on policies that address the barriers at every stage, with special attention to girls who still face the greatest disadvantage.”

A new paper, Leaving no one behind: How far on the way to universal primary and secondary education?, released jointly by the agency’s  Institute for Statistics and the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, finds that the total number includes about 61 million children of primary school age (6-11 years), 60 million of lower secondary age (12-14 years), and about 142 million of upper secondary school age (15-17 years). This is the first-ever study to estimate of those at the secondary school age.

Sub-Saharan Africa, with the lowest numbers, had over a fifth of children of primary school age, followed by a third of youths in the  lower secondary age, and almost 60 per cent of youths in the upper  secondary age out of schools.

Globally, 35 per cent (22 million) of all out-of-school children of primary education age, 25 per cent of all adolescents of lower secondary  age (15 million), and 18 per cent (26 million) of all out-of-school youths of upper secondary age live in areas affected by conflict.

It further noted that, in general, 15 to 17-year-olds are four times  as likely to be out of school as are children aged 6 to 11, partly because primary and lower secondary education are compulsory in nearly every country, while upper secondary school is not.

“At the same time, these youths are often of legal working age. Many have no choice but to work while others try to combine going to school  with employment,” said the statement.

The paper also found that despite efforts made and progress achieved over the past two decades, 15 million girls of primary school age will  never get the chance to learn to read or write in primary school compared  to about 10 million boys. Over half of these girls, some nine million,  live in sub-Saharan Africa.

It noted that poverty creates an additional barrier for girls. In Northern Africa and Western Asia, according to the GEM Report’s analysis, gaps are far wider among the poorest in the region.

Only 85 girls for every 100 boys of lower secondary school age attend school. Among those of upper secondary school age, only 77 of the poorest girls for every 100 of the poorest boys attend.
