Iran deal best way to ensure peaceful nuclear programme: UN chief

UNITED NATIONS, July 20 (APP): United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Wednesday said that the nuclear deal agreed to last year by Iran and six world powers is the best way of ensuring the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme, calling for the comprehensive implementation of the accord, as well as a subsequent Security Council resolution that endorsed it.

In a statement, the Secretary-General congratulated the Council and the participants in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the first anniversary of the ‘historic achievement’ and commended progress made so far.

On July 20 last year, the Council adopted resolution 2231 (2015), endorsing the JCPOA under which Iran pledged that it would not seek, develop or acquire nuclear weapons.

The resolution called the deal a culmination of diplomatic efforts by Iran and the so-called E3+3 China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Ban said the JCPOA was a triumph of diplomacy for conflict resolution and prevention, and strengthened global norms for nuclear non-proliferation.

He explained that, combined with a robust verification regime, the agreement ended one of the Council’s strictest sanctions regimes, and provided Iran with the opportunity for greater engagement with the international community.

“Resolution 2231 (2015) heralded a fundamental shift in Iran’s relationship with the Security Council, and provided a defined time schedule for the removal of the Iran nuclear issue from the Council’s agenda,” the Secretary-General said.

He also commended Iran for implementing its nuclear-related commitments, as verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency, while also applauding the steps taken by the European Union and the United States.

“One year on, I remain certain that the JCPOA is the best way to ensure the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme and to realise the great aspirations of the Iranian people,” he said, calling for the agreement and resolution 2231 to be implemented in a comprehensive manner, based on mutual respect and mutual benefit.

That would facilitate greater cooperation to achieve international peace and security, he added.

Improve your governance instead of maligning others: Saad Rafique

Profile Picture

ISLAMABAD, Jul 20 (APP): Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique Wednesday advised PTI Chief Imran to improve governance in the province of his party’s government instead of mocking others on non-issues.

Talking to a private news channel, he said Imran Khan is oblivious to the corruption in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but is playing to the galleries by targeting the governments that are busy day and night in alleviating masses suffering.

He said it is not for the first time that PTI chief Imran Khan
announced to come on roads as his politics is all about the roads, streets, black mailing and pressure tactics.

Earlier he surrounded Election Commission, then he surrounded the Parliament and now he is planning for NAB.

“Who knows to which direction he will move in days to come as he lacks clarity of thought and dimension.”

He said it was better if Imran Khan improves governance in
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) because he always keeps clambering about corruption but he never told people why corruption was rampant in KP during three years tenure of PTI.

If his party had curtailed corruption in KP then why it is not visible to masses as people in KP themselves say openly that they are not seeing any visible change in the province.

He said Imran Khan has the right to criticize the government, oppose its policies in the Parliament and go to the courts if he deems it fit, but when he would politick on roads then he would be playing with national integrity and democracy.

Imran Khan dose not want accountability in the country, if he had wanted so, there could have been many ways. But, he was suffering from Nawaz Sharif phobia.

He said Imran Khan’s one point agenda is to send the
democratic elected government home before completing its term.

Saad Rafique said that all impartial political parties in the Parliament can call a jirga to resolve the matter of Terms of
Reference on Panama Papers.
