Summer vacation to start from May 24: Minister

LAHORE, May 22 (APP): The Punjab Education Department has announced summer vacation from May 24 in educational institutions in the province.

Summer vacation will start from May 24 and continue up to
August 14. Earlier, the Education department had fixed June 1 for summer vacation. However, keeping in view the hotness, and difficulties of children and their parents, the Education department has decided to start summer vacations from May 24.

Provincial Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan expressed these views while addressing a press conference at the committee room of Schools Education Department, on Sunday.

NHA taking measures to ensure early completion of CPEC

ISLAMABAD, May 22 (APP): National Highway Authority (NHA) is taking all possible measures to ensure the early completion of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

An NHA official told APP Sunday that CPEC was the name of building roads from Khunjerab to Gwadar. “The CPEC project, comprises modern highway and railway transportation system linking Kashgar in West China to Khunjerab in the north and onwards to Karachi and Gwadar in the south of Pakistan through multiple routes”, he added.

He said a number of sections of this mega project have been completed and remaining sections are under construction.

As per statistics from Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), Pakistani app developers are not only designing mobile apps for local market but they are also developing apps for exporting, contributing precious foreign exchange to national kitty.

UN conference spotlights role of tourism in fighting poverty and building peace

UNITED NATIONS, May 22 (APP): Tourism plays a crucial role in lifting people out of poverty and building peace, participants from more than 100 countries gathered at a United Nations conference in Beijing this week have said, calling for greater efforts to step up international cooperation in that regard.

“Tourism is one of the most dynamic economic sectors, with significant global reach, and as such can make an important contribution to the achievement of the [Sustainable Development Goals] SDGs, particularly in the areas of job creation, sustainable consumption and production and the preservation of natural resources, as stated in Goal 8, Goal 12 and Goal 14 of the SDGs,” Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in a press release issued in New York.

The First World Conference on Tourism for Development “which has gathered more than 1,000 participants” is being held from 18 to 21 May under the theme of “Tourism for Peace and Development.”

DOHA, May 22, (APP/AFP) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon urged regional and international powers to push Syrian warring parties to engage in talks on a political transition to end their country’s “nightmare”.

“United Nations special envoy (Staffan de Mistura) continues to work intently with the parties towards meaningful talks. We need a full and immediate cessation of hostilities. Just as important we need to begin discussions on the transition ,” Ban told the Doha forum for democracy and development in the Qatari capital.

“I feel that without such a political horizon, a further escalation is all too likely.

Pak-China friendship unprecedented in world: Shehbaz Sharif

PM directs provision of emergency relief to Sri Lankan flood victims

ISLAMABAD, May 21 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has directed the authorities concerned to make immediate arrangements for provision of emergency relief to the Sri Lankan flood victims.

In line with the directive of the Prime Minister following material and equipment are being sent to Sri Lanka from the government and the people of Pakistan as emergency relief for flood victims.

These include 100 tents for health service provision, 200 water pumps, 20 vehicles for transportation of health staff, 100 electricity generators, 400 emergency lamps, 500 pairs of boots, 1000 raincoats, 1000 umbrellas, 1000 torches, 50 mobile water purification plants, five mini mobile hospitals and 500kg insecticides for fly control as solphax.

NEW YORK, May 21 (APP): Former President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed concern over the current strain in Islamabad-Washington relations, saying Pakistan was committed to combating terrorism.

“We are fighting for our lives,” Zardari, who is also co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), said, referring to mass-casualty attacks by the Taliban and Al Qaeda, most recently in Lahore, in a letter published in The New York Times on Saturday.

“If there are factions in Congress that don’t believe that we are committed to fighting terrorists, they should come to Pakistan and bear witness to our solidarity and resolve,” the former president said, while responding to a recent Times’
editorial that blamed Pakistan for all the troubles in neighbouring Afghanistan.

China, Pakistan are all weather strategic partners: President Xi

ISLAMABAD, May 21 (APP): President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang have extended to the Pakistani leadership their warm wishes on the occasion of 65th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan.

President Xi Jinping, in his message, said that China and Pakistan were all-weather strategic partners of cooperation.

Over the past 65 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relations, China-Pakistan relations had stood the tests of the changes of the international and domestic situations and made headway constantly, he said.

The championship was inaugurated by Tariq Murtaza.

Top seed Ilham Khan eliminated Hassan Imtiaz 6-3,6-3. Second seed  Yousaf Hassan was also in good form and beat Umair Masood Abbasi without any resistance at the score 6-1, 6-1.

ISLAMABAD, May 21 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has congratulated and conveyed his best wishes to President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping and his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang, Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, on the auspicious occasion of 65th anniversary of establishment of Pak-China diplomatic ties.

The Prime Minister, in his separate messages, said Pakistan was the first Muslim state to recognize China.

Over the past 65 years, relations between Pakistan and China had grown from strength to strength, evolving and expanding into an all-weather cooperative strategic partnership, he noted.

ISLAMABAD, May 21 (APP): Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid Saturday said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif always took along a list of development projects in public gatherings, whereas Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan carried a list of allegations to mislead the people.

The minister, in a statement, said Imran Khan had been repeatedly telling lies and was exposed badly. Those who had been seeking explanations from others, were now compelled to give explanations themselves, he added.

The ‘Public Court’ had rejected the allegations of the PTI chief in every city of the country, he remarked.

Political unrest must not affect economic stability: Dar

ISLAMABAD, May 21 (APP): Minister for Finance Muhammad Ishaq Dar on Saturday called for ensuring that the economic gains were not affected due to any political unrest in the country.

“During last three years, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government has been able to stabilize the dwindling economic conditions as has been endorsed by 22 major international rating agencies,” Dar said while addressing a pre-budget seminar organized by Duniya Media Group here.

ISLAMABAD, May 21 (APP): President Mamnoon Hussain has conveyed to the Chinese leadership, the deepest felicitations of the government and people of Pakistan on 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations
between two friendly and brotherly countries.

President Mamnoon, in his message to President People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, said in the past 65 years, Pakistan had strengthened friendship, deepened mutual trust and expanded cooperation with China.

“Our relationship has been elevated to a robust all-weather cooperative strategic partnership and has grown to encompass many areas of cooperation, including economy, trade, science and technology, people-to-people contacts, culture and education,” he was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the Foreign Office on Saturday.

Interest rate cut by 25 basis points at 5.75%

Pakistan's regional exports increase 34.75% in July-August 2021

KARACHI, May 21 (APP): State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Saturday announced to reduce its policy (interest) rate by 25 basis points from 6.0 percent to 5.75 percent.

In its monetary policy statement unveiled here, SBP said towards the end of fiscal year 2015-16, macroeconomic conditions continued to improve.

Headline CPI inflation, despite its continuous increase on year-on-year (YoY) basis, would remain below its 2015-16 annual average target of 6 percent.

China always supported Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir issue: Barjees

ISLAMABAD, May 21 (APP): Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Chaudhry Muhammad Barjees Tahir on Saturday said China, being the time-tested friend, had always supported Pakistan’s principled stance on the longstanding Kashmir issue with India.

“Pakistan-China friendship is higher than Himalayas, deeper than oceans and sweater than honey,” he said in an interview with APP in connection with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China.

China, he said, had effectively helped Pakistan in diverse fields including setting up of basic infrastructure to overcome energy crisis, economic development and supported Pakistan’s view points on different international issues at every fora.

Various goals of country’s development to be achieved under CPEC: Envoy

ISLAMABAD, May 21 (APP): Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Masood Khalid Saturday said various goals of the country’s development would be achieved under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

Various energy and infrastructure projects had been started under the CPEC which would bring economic development and progress in the country, he said while talking to PTV.

He said 65th anniversary of Pak-China diplomatic relations, which had strengthened over the years, was being celebrated. The relations were at a defining stage, which would go further fast after the completion of CPEC project as per envisioned by the Chinese President, he added.
