UNITED NATIONS, Apr 12 (APP): The process for the selection of the next UN Secretary General began at UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, with member states interacting with candidates for the first time in the organization’s 70 year history.

The secretary general is chosen by the 193 member General Assembly on the recommendation of the 15 member Security Council, according to the U.N. Charter.

But in the past, the appointment of world’s top diplomatic post was decided behind closed doors by the five permanent members of Security Council—Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
