HYDERABAD, Jul 23 (APP):The district administration Matiari set a target of planting 100,000 trees to address climate change. A meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Yousuf Shaikh decided to launch a large-scale tree plantation campaign to mitigate the effects of climate change, especially during the summer season. The initiative will involve government and non-government organizations as well as civil society groups.
According to a handout issued on Tuesday, the meeting was attended by DHO Pir Ghulam Hussain, Additional Deputy Commissioner Noor Ahmed Khahro, Additional Director Social Welfare Rafique Jamali, Deputy Director Livestock Dr. Riaz Laghari and officers from various departments such as revenue, forest, health, education, environment and climate change, local government, police and irrigation, as well as representatives from NGOs and civil society organizations.
The Deputy Commissioner directed the Forest Department to plant 25,000 saplings along the banks of the Indus River, canals, branches and all irrigation sites. Additionally, 5,000 trees will be planted in Matiari, Hala, and Saeedabad with the cooperation of civil society organizations and local residents.
The meeting outlined that the public health engineering department will plant 5,000 trees at 8 disposal sites, and 1,000 trees will be planted at health centers. Under the supervision of SSP Matiari, at least 25 saplings will be planted at each police station, while town committee Matiari and municipal committee Hala will plant 1,000 trees each in the first phase, with other town committees and Union Councils participating in the drive.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized promoting and planting indigenous tree species such as mango, jamun, mulberry, and other fruit-bearing trees. A forest department representative mentioned their readiness to plant at least 80,000 saplings in various nurseries at different locations.
The DC maintained that Care International and the Australian High Commission had pledged full support to combat climate change and environmental degradation. He stressed the importance of collective efforts from all stakeholders to launch a massive tree plantation campaign, noting that the climate was becoming increasingly intolerable and could pose serious threats in the coming years
