ISLAMABAD, Jan 24 (APP):The Union of OIC News Agencies (UNA) held its 26th Executive Council session online, chaired by the Acting Chairman and Saudi Press Agency President, Ali bin Abdullah Al-Zaid, key discussions focused on adapting to global media changes, advancing digitization, and strengthening media collaboration among member states.
The 26th session of the Executive Council of the Union of OIC News Agencies brought together representatives from member states and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Chaired by Ali bin Abdullah Al-Zaid, the meeting addressed pressing challenges in the media industry and outlined strategies for progress.
In his opening remarks, Al-Zaid emphasized the need for regional and international media unions, such as UNA, to adapt to rapid transformations in the media landscape.
He highlighted the importance of adopting digital tools and innovative content production to stay relevant. Al-Zaid reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting UNA’s initiatives and enhancing its capabilities under the Saudi Press Agency’s leadership.
Gratitude was extended to Saudi leadership, including King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for their financial and logistical support, which has enabled UNA to expand its programs and operations.
Al-Zaid also thanked Saudi Minister of Media Salman bin Yousef Al-Dosari for his continued backing of UNA’s projects.
OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha praised UNA’s efforts in promoting OIC media initiatives, enhancing global awareness of Islamic issues, and building partnerships with local and international organizations. He noted UNA’s growing role in strengthening media infrastructure across its member states.
Palestinian Minister Ahmed Assaf acknowledged UNA’s support for Palestine, particularly in amplifying the Palestinian perspective amid ongoing challenges. He commended the Union’s focus on countering disinformation and bias, which has helped highlight the struggles faced by Palestinians, including attacks on media outlets.
UNA Director-General Mohamed bin Abdulrab Al-Yami highlighted the Union’s financial recovery, made possible by contributions from member states. Saudi Arabia’s contribution of over $3 million was instrumental in resolving UNA’s debts. Qatar, the UAE, Oman, Pakistan, and other countries were also recognized for their financial support.
The session concluded with the approval of UNA’s 2025 budget, activity reports, and future plans. Resolutions aimed at advancing Islamic media cooperation will be presented to the General Assembly.
The Executive Council includes representatives from Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Gambia, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, and the UAE.
