UN General Assembly resolution denounces Syrian crackdown; Pakistan abstains
UNITED NATIONS, Aug 3 (APP): The UN General Assembly Friday adopted a resolution condemning the increasing use of heavy weapons by Syrian authorities and urging all sides to immediately cease armed violence. The resolution, presented by the Arab Group, was adopted by a vote of 133 in favour to 12 against with 31 abstentions, including Pakistan, and comes two weeks after the Security Council failed to agree on collective action to help stop the bloodshed.Pakistan abstained on the resolution, calling it “unbalanced” since it singles out for blame only one party to the ongoing conflict. Pakistan also has serious reservations to the text because it welcomes the July 22 Arab League resolution, which calls on President Bashar al-Assad to step down. And Pakistan main objection was that the resolution condemns its own Security Council for failing to end the unrest in Syria as fighting rages.
