New York police scrap Muslim spy unit -
NEW YORK, April 16 (APP): The New York Police Department (NYPD) has disbanded a secret programme under which detectives were sent to spy on local Muslims at places frequented by them. The Demographics Unit’s operations became highly controversial and was  the subject of two federal lawsuits in the past.  Civil rights groups denounced police targetting of the Muslims community. “This reform is a critical step forward in easing tensions between the  police and the communities they serve, so that our cops and our citizens can help one another go after the real bad guys,” the office of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wrote in a statement on Tuesday.

American Muslim leader says inter-faith dialogue critical to fostering peace -
WASHINGTON, April 16 (APP): A prominent American Muslim leader has urged a sustained inter-faith dialogue effort towards fostering mutual understanding, peace and socio-economic development in the post-9/11 world, riddled with wars and violent extremism. Frank Islam, a leading entrepreneur and philanthropist, was speaking  at premiere screening of acclaimed Pakistani scholar Akbar S Ahmed’s play Noor, which focuses on implications of conflict between forces of moderation and extremism within the Muslim societies and the United States’ strained relationship with some Muslim countries.

UN rights expert urges Israel to prevent settlersí takeover of West Bank building near Ibrahami Mosq -
UNITED NATIONS, April 15 (APP): A United Nations human rights expert Tuesday urged Israel to prevent settlers from taking over Al-Rajabi House, a building in the West Bank city of Hebron that was built by Palestinian families but whose ownership was granted to the settlers after a protracted legal battle. The four-story building capable of housing 40 families is located  strategically between the illegal settlement of Kiryat Arba and the Ibrahami Mosque, also known as Cave of Patriarchs, in the old city of Hebron.

Iran protests UN Ambassador's visa denial -
UNITED NATIONS, April 15 (APP): Iran has lodged a protest at the United Nations over the U.S. refusal to grant a visa to its new U.N. ambassador, saying the move sets a "dangerous" precedent. The White House has said that Iran's selection of Hamid Aboutalebi to be  its United Nations envoy is not "viable". Aboutalebi was reportedly involved with a group of Iranian students responsible for the 1979 takeover of the U.S.

Pakistan set to reap benefit from Chinese experience -
BEIJING, Apr 15 (APP): Pakistan enthusiastically participates in all regional cooperation initiatives led by China whether they are strategically important or economically crucial, such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA). Equated by some with the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the latest BFA just concluded in South China’s Hainan Province, reports infuential English daily Global Times. PNF GC approves budget of Rs. 9 million
ISLAMABAD, April 16 (APP): A budget of Rs 9 million for the year of 2014-15 was approved in the General Council Meeting of Pakistan Netball Federation (PNF) held here at committee room of Pakistan Sports Board on Wednesday.  The meeting was held under the chairmanship of President PNF Zafar Iqbal Awan. All affiliated units attended the meeting.  The house also gave the approval for the sports activity for the year 2014-15 including National Beach Net Ball Championship allotted to Sindh Netball Association to be held in May 2014 in Karachi.
Wasti asks Pak players not to bother about IPL
ISLAMABAD, April 16 (APP): Former Test cricketer Wajahatullah Wasti on Wednesday advised Pakistani players not to bother about not playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). There is a lot more for them in the world of cricket, where they should try to prove their worth, he said while talking to APP.
Indo-Pak clash, dire need of subcontinent: Zaheer Abbas
ISLAMABAD, Apr 15 (APP): Asian Bradman Zaheer Abbas while praising the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi for doing all-out efforts for the Indo-Pak clash said Pakistan and India face-to-face is just like the Ashes series of the subcontinent.After an ICC meeting in Dubai, the PCB announced it would conditionally support the reforms to be officially signed in June this year which Sethi said will bring major benefits to Pakistan. Sethi had said that Pakistan will get eight years of series, including archrivals India, earning $300 million, after agreeing to the revamp of the game’s governing body.
Keeping Pakistani players away from IPL is a great blow: Wasim Akram
ISLAMABAD, Apr 15 (APP): Former captain Wasim Akram feels keeping Pakistani players away from the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a great blow for cricket-lovers saying mixing sports and politics won’t do any good. Pakistani players have been barred from participating in the IPL since 2008. Howevevr, Akram feels this is the right time for the Pakistani players to be reinstated, for the benefit of subcontinental sports fans.Akram, who is the bowling coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), said whenever Pakistan and India players have played either against each other  or together, they have attracted lot of crowds. “I hope in near future Pakistani players will be able to participate because we have great talent,” Pakpassion.net quoted Akram as saying.
21th Jeevay Pakistan cycle rally to start on April 23
MUZAFFARGARH, Apr 13 (APP): The 21th Jeevay Pakistan cycle rally will leave for Islamabad, here from April 23, Wednesday. The rally titled ‘Anti-drugs and love with sports’ will start from Missali Public school Muzaffargarh and conclude at Jinnah Stadium Islamabad on May 8. A meeting with Commissioner Dera Ghazi Khan Division, Suhail Shahzad was held in the chair at Commissioner’s office on Sunday to review arrangements for the rally. Commissioner DG Khan lauded for holding cycle rally and urged the participants of the rally to play their role in eradicating menace of narcotics and promote sports and other positive activities.

WASHINGTON, April 12 (APP): Finance Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar has invited American entrepreneurs to avail tremendous investment opportunities that Pakistan’s large market offers amid improving economy. “The potential for expansion in Pakistan-US trade and investment is much bigger than even the current strong levels,” he said. Speaking to members of Pakistan-US Business Council, which included representatives from energy companies and many other sectors, Dar renewed Islamabad’s commitment to facilitate foreign investors in doing business in a host of promising areas. Citing robust international interest in Pakistan’s recent reentry into the bonds market, and a recent assessment by Japan External Trade Organization, which rates Pakistan as the second best place of choice for investment, the finance minister said foreign investment in Pakistan enjoyed full legal protection, and the cost of human resource in production was also very lucrative.

Talking to the media at Nisar Fatima Model Girls High School, he said the economy was the top priority of the PML-N government. He said stock exchanges had witnessed bearish trend and foreign investors shown keen interest due to comprehensives policies of the government. Constructive and comprehensive policies of the government would help boost economy and overcome crisis, he added. The Minister said, “Pakistan’s future is linked to the economy which can be put to the right direction through political stability but some forces, which do not want to see peace, economic development and progress of the country, are trying to make conspiracies against national and political stability”.

ABBOTTABAD, April 12 (APP): Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad Yousaf said on Saturday he would move a resolution for the creation of Hazara province in the National Assembly and Senate. A separate province was the constitutional right of the people of Hazara, the minister said  while addressing the All Parties Martyrs Conference to commemorate those who were killed on April 12, 2010 during a demonstration for the new province. He said the adoption of resolution for Hazara province by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was the first step. The minister said they had formed a committee, which would meet Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and leaders of political parties to develop consensus on the resolution for new province in the Senate and National Assembly. Sardar Yousuf said seven people had given their lives for the cause of a separate province, which would not go waste.

LAHORE, Apr 12 (APP): Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that a modern Command and Control Center is being set up in Lahore and work on this project was continuing speedily as protection of life and property of the people is the foremost duty of police. He warned that no negligence or laxity will be tolerated in the protection of life and property of the people. He directed that police should immediately arrest the culprits involved in Ichhara incident and said that such incidents would not be tolerated in future. He was presiding over a high level meeting for reviewing the overall law and order situation in the province at Lahore airport after return from China on Saturday.

UNITED NATIONS, April 12 (APP): While reaffirming it’s opposition to adding new individual permanent members in the Security Council, Pakistan has proposed that the 15-member body’s  expansion should be “within a reasonable limit” to ensure that it functions efficiently and effectively. “We want a smart, not a bloated, Council,” Ambassador Masood Khan, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the U.N. when the stalled intergovernmental negotiations (IGN) on restructuring the Security Council resumed on Friday. “Each new seat will need to be justified,” he said, addinng, “The main rationale for increasing the size of the Council is to ensure equitable representation by addressing the regional imbalance and under-representation that exists in the Council’s current composition, proportionate to the total UN membership.”

ISLAMABAD, April 12 (APP): Prime Minister of Republic of Korea Chung Hongwon will arrive here Sunday on a four-day official visit to Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. Federal Minister for Planning Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal will receive the Korean Prime Minister and his delegation at the Nur Khan Base. This will be the first-ever prime minister level visit to Pakistan from the Republic of Korea since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1983. During his stay, the Korean Prime Minister will meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif followed by delegation level talks. He will also call on President Mamnoon Hussain.
