ISLAMABAD, May 23 (APP): High alert was declared in Hunza and the entrance into the vacated villages of the area was prohibited by the authrities on Sunday in view of imminent threat of flood there due to bursting of landslide-triggered lake.The situation was all the more dangerous as the gap between the spillway and the water level in the lake had narrowed to six feet.  The inflow at the  lake was 2600 cusecs and outflow was 200 cusecs as the lake have spreaded over 26-kilometer area, a private news channel reported.

WFP to assist humanitarian community in transportation of relief supplies for Hunza PDF Print E-mail

ISLAMABAD, May 23 (APP): Responding to an urgent request made by Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has started transporting critical relief supplies for the affected people of Hunza. A press release issued here Sunday said that a convoy of 16 trucks loaded with some 12,500 blankets, 1,500 kerosene stoves, 5,000 plastic sheets, 2,500 hygiene kits, 2,500 kitchen sets, 2,570 jerry cans, 2,500 plastic buckets and 195 water coolers left from Aza Khel, Nowshera near Peshawar was seen off by officials of PRCS, NDMA and WFP.

ISLAMABAD, May 22 (APP): National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Saturday stated that it has made all arrangements to control any critical situation that would emerge after releasing water from the spillway at Lake Attabad.  “While asking for making geological survey to remain alert in future, we have also made a brief analysis of losses made in these day,” Director Operations of NDMA Sajid Naeem told media here. He said, they have evacuated more than 34 villages as a precautionary measure. Nearly 3,500 displaced persons are being resided in more than  31 camps located at nearby places of artificial lake at Attabad, he informed.

ALTIT (HUNZA), May 21 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said that following the damage assessment a compensation package would soon be announced for the Hunza lake affectees and assured funds from the federal government on priority.Gilani who is here on a day-long visit to assess the situation caused by the landsliding at Atta Abad and the blockage of the Hunza river, said it was important to turn challenges into opportunities.He prayed for those killed in the natural calamity and appreciated the courage with which the people braved the disaster.  He said it was a temporary phase and they would be able to return to their homes soon.

The lake was created on January 4 as a huge landslide blocked the flow of Hunza river and carried along with it the Atta Abad village. The artificial lake has stretched back to 19 km, submerging a number of low-lying villages, destroying crops and fruit trees.

ISLAMABAD, May 20 (APP): Rescue activities for affectees of Attabad lake has gained momentum as weather became clear Thursday after several days of rains and winds. Helicopter service has resumed which was postponed Wednesday due to bad weather. However, sunny weather has speed up the melting process of glaciers which will likely raise the water level in the lake. Currently, the level of water in artificially formed 16 km long Attabad Lake which was over 352 feet on the River Hunza has reached dangerous level.

ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has taken substantiative relief measures for the affectees of Hunza Lake at Ataabad, besides adopting a strategy to control water level arisen alarmingly over 337 feet, which has submerged a long part of Karakurram Highway. Talking to APP on Monday, NDMA official Brig Saeed said the authority has successfully launched a rescue operation. “If no fresh landsliding occurs, we would reopen the road today”, he informed.

ISLAMABAD, May 15 (APP) - In compliance with the directive of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, the Emergency Relief Cell (ERC) of Cabinet Division has dispatched a relief consignment for people affected by landslide in Hunza Valley. The consignment comprises 2,000 tents, 2,000 blankets, 10,000 plastic mats, 2,000 jackets, 5,000 family rations packets, medicines, Life jackets and generators worth Rs. 47.319 million, says a press release.

QUETTA, June 20 (APP): The PPP-led Balochistan coalition government on Saturday presented Rs 74.247 billion tax-free budget with an overall deficit of Rs 8.332 billion for the fiscal year 2009-10. “The budget envisages development programme of Rs 18.536 billion including Rs 5.107 billion of foreign project assistance-FPA and with current budget of Rs 53.081 billion,” provincial finance minister Asim Kurd Gailu said in his speech while presenting the second annual budget of the coalition government in Balochistan assembly here on Saturday.
