UN agency calls for urgent action to protect global soil from depletion, degradation -
UNITED NATIONS, July 25 (APP): The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is calling for urgent action to improve the health of the world’s limited soil resources to ensure that future generations have enough supplies of food, water and energy.

UNITED NATIONS, July 24 (APP):  Reducing vulnerability and strengthening resilience are critical to securing human development progress, the United Nations said in a flagship report released Thursday that examines the risks posed by natural or human-induced disasters and crises and offers ways to tackle them.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 18 (APP): Pakistan and China on Friday inked 13 agreements and Memoranda of Understanding on cooperation in economy, energy, banking, security and technology.  Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao witnessed the signing of documents as the respective ministers and officials of Pakistan and China inked them. The Agreements and MoUs were signed to expand cooperation in the utilization, management, training, educational programmes and modernization of railways and to establish a long term cooperative relationship on the basis of equality and mutual benefits.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 18 (APP): China on Saturday announced $10 million grant for citizens compensation programme for flood victims and $400 million concession loan to help meet their needs.  Speaking at National Disastrous Management Authority the Chinese Premier Wen Jeabao said that China would continue to help Pakistan in the post disastrous phase of the flood. China would also provide resources and technical support to Pakistan for disastrous prevention and forecasting technology.

BEIJNG, DEC 18 (APP):  China and Pakistan always stood togather in fighting natural disasters, terrorism or countering separatism.  As decades-long close friends and neighbours, China and Pakistan have always lent a helping hand to each other, especially in times of need, said an article by a prominent Chinese scholar appeared in Saturday’s China Daily.  This year has been no exception. When Pakistan was devastated by one of the worst floods in its history earlier this year, China offered about US $250 million in aid to it. As part of the aid, China sent a team of experts to Pakistan in November to help the country expedite its reconstruction work.

He said China would give a grant of dollar 229 million for flood affected road network and agriculture sector leading to provision of rice processors and latest technology of cold storage.

A red carpet was rolled out for the Chinese Premier as he alighted from the special Air China aircraft. The Chinese Premier’s white Boeing 747 with blue stripes was escorted by four Sino-Pak joint production JF-17 Thunder aircraft, as it crossed the Indian border and touched Chaklala Air Base.
