Pakistanis remarkably tolerant, least racist: Survey -
WASHINGTON, May 18 (APP): Pakistanis are among the most racially tolerant people in the world, despite having less economic development and being located in the region housing some of the least racially tolerant populations, findings of a survey reveal. According to World Values Survey, which has been measuring global attitudes and opinions for decades, only 6.5 percent of Pakistanis object to a neighbor of a different race. In only three of 81 surveyed countries by Swedish economists, more than 40 percent of respondents said they would not want a neighbor of a different race, a report in The Washington Post said citing conclusions of the survey.


Pakistan stresses dialogue, development in terrorist-hit areas to combat scourge of terrorism -
UNITED NATIONS, May 18 (APP): Pakistan Friday called for sharper focus on dialogue and development in terrorist-hit areas, while maintaining military pressure as part of efforts to eliminate the scourge of terrorism. “When terrorists defy the writ of the state, kill civilians, spread terror, they have to be stopped; stopped by the use of force; stopped militarily,” Ambassador Masood Khan told more than 100 delegates attending a Pakistan-sponsored seminar at U.N. Headquarters in New York. “There is absolutely no doubt about that,” the Pakistani envoy said of using military means against terrorists. “But,” he added, “by killing the terrorists, we do not defeat terrorism. To eliminate terrorism, we have to go into the causes and deconstruct the mindset that launches them into terrorism.”


Outgoing Pakistan ambassador Sherry Rehman urges trade, end to drone strikes -
WASHINGTON,  May 18 (APP): Pakistan's outgoing ambassador to the United States Sherry Rehman has said the Pakistan and the United States have improved their ties considerably from a low-point in 2011 but asked Washington to end drone strikes in the tribal areas in order to help put the relationship on sustained upward trajectory. In a farewell speech to a gathering of senior American officials and Pakistani-Americans, Ms. Rehman who resigned from her post this week after May 11 election, also called for using trade as the engine for enhanced bilateral partnership.


Pak to become Chinese Beidou navigation system's fourth overseas user -
BEIJING, May 18 (APP): China's Beidou navigation system is set to increase its presence in the Asia-Pacific region, with Pakistan expected to become its fourth overseas customer later this month.Huang Lei, international business director of Beijing BDStar Navigation, which helps promote Beidou, or Compass, in the international market, told China Daily the company will build a network of stations in Pakistan to enhance the location accuracy of Beidou. These continuously operational reference stations will be built after the two countries sign a cooperation agreement, which will see Pakistan follow in the footsteps of Thailand, Laos and Brunei in becoming a Beidou customer.


Pakistani artist’s large-scale installation atop Metropolitan Museum’s Roof Garden opens -
NEW YORK, May 17 (APP): Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi’s large-scale site-specific work atop New York’s Metropolitan Museum’s Roof Garden opened Thursday in the presence of a big gathering of art lovers. Qureshi, 41, is known worldwide for his unique style of combining the motifs, symbolism, and ornamental techniques of Islamic art with modern conceptual approaches. The exhibition, Entitled The Roof Garden Commission: Imran Qureshi, the project represents the artist’s emotional response to violence occurring across the globe in recent decades and his earnest hope for regeneration and lasting peace in the aftermath of man-made disasters. Using the nearly 8,000-square-foot open-air space as his canvas, Qureshi edhas worked areas of his spilled and splattered red acrylic paint into patterns of lush ornamental leaves that evoke the luxuriant walled gardens that are ubiquitous in miniatures of the Mughal court; they also echo the spectacular verdant foliage of Central Park surrounding the Roof Garden.

LAHORE, May 18 (APP): Pakistan Army won the title of the 10th  national women cycling championship here on Saturday at the cycling velodrome. Army’s riders added another gold to their previous four to emerge the winners of the three-day premier event held under the supervision of Pakistan Cycling Federation,Munawar Baseer Group.

Recent spot-fixing scandal has tarnished cricket’s image further: ex-players
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Former Pakistan cricketers feel that the recent spot-fixing scandal that has rocked ongoing Indian Premier has tarnished the image of the game of cricket. Erstwhile skipper Zaheer Abbas in an interview on Friday said that he was shocked by the scandal involving Indian Test player,  Sreesanth and two others—Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. “What worries me is that this apparently is just the tip of the iceberg as far as corruption in cricket is concerned. There have always been fears that the IPL was a soft target for bookmakers but no one took this seriously,” he said.

Army wins 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo C’ship
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Pakistan Army won the 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo Championship by clinching overall 17 gold, three silver and two bronze medals on Friday here at Liaquat Gymnasium. Army secured a total of 507 points. WAPDA remained second with 165 points, securing one gold, six silver and two bronze medals.

National athletics championship dedicated to Zakir Syed
LAHORE, May 17 (APP): Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) has decided to dedicate the 45th edition of the National Athletics Championship in the memory of late Syed Zakir Hussain Syed, a former director general of Pakistan Sports Board. The premier activity, both for men and women, will be organised May 24 at Jinnah stadium Islamabad and all the affiliated units of the AFP will take part, said a spokesman of AFP here on Friday. He said late Zakir rendered meritorious services for the cause of sports in the country and the AFP has decided to dedicate the championship to him to acknowledge his valuable contributions as a sports administrative. “Over 500 athletes belonging to the four provinces, AJ&K, FATA, Gilgit Baltistan and various services and departments will compete in the three-day sports “, he added.
 
Around 500 athletes to feature in National Athletics C’ship
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): The National Athletics Championship will explode into action from May 24 to 26 at Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad. Around 500 men and women athletes will chip in the three-day event, Secretary General, Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) Muhammad Zafar said on Friday. He said the championship had been dedicated to late Syed Zakir Hussain, former Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB).

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP): Prime Minister Justice retired Mir Hazar Khan Khoso  Monday telephoned  President National Party, Dr. Abdul Malik to enquire about his welfare after appearance of media reports that his convoy was attacked in Turbat Balochistan.He condemned the attack and was relieved to learn that no harm was caused to Dr Abdul Malik.The Prime Minister told Dr. Abdul Malik that he had already issued instructions to  provincial government of Balochistan to enhance security of candidates participating in the elections.The Prime Minister expressed the hope that the measures taken for enhancing security would improve the law and order situation in the country.

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP): Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan has said that criticism on the ECP and caretaker government regarding provision of the security is baseless. Talking to VOA, he said problem has not been created within last 30 or 40 days but the country was facing this problem for the last many years. He regretted over the loss of many lives in the terrorists activities.Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan said that ECP  has completed all the arrangements for holding free and fair elections. Currently the ECP has directed the government to take measures for improvement of the security situation for holding  free and fair elections in a peaceful environment, he added.

Responding to a query regarding President Karzai’s recent press conference in Kabul, the Spokesperson of the Foreign Office Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry said Durand-Line is a settled issues and it should not be discussed any more. Commenting on the statement of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, in which President urges Taliban to “turn and target” and “aim their weapons at” Afghanistan’s enemies, the Spokesperson stated that the continuing fight against terrorism and extremism warrants Pakistan, Afghanistan, and all other stakeholders to work together in a spirit of cooperation and harmony.

KARACHI, May 5 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari Sunday strongly condemned the acts of violence against the candidates and their election offices in different parts of the country and expressed the resolve that despite the odds the general election will held on May 11.President Zardari expressed concern over the attack on the convoy of  Sardar Sarfraz Domki and Dostain Domki in Sibi. The President also condemned the attacks on the election offices of  candidates in Mach and Kharan and expressed convern over the reports of injuries to several people.He also condemned the bomb blast that targetted a public rally of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf at Takht Bhai, that also caused injuries to several people. President Zardari urged the law enforcement authorities for taking strict measures to ensure protection of lives and properties of the people and particularly all the candidates so as to ensure smooth conduct of the elections. He also called for provision of best possible medical care to all the injured.
