Washington, July 31 (APP): Appreciating Pakistan's constructive role in the Afghan reconciliation process, a U.S. State Department spokesman on Thursday encouraged the Taliban to seize a 'moment of opportunity' to make genuine peace and become part of the legitimate political system of Afghanistan.


Diplomats call for addressing root causes of refugee and migrant flows at Pakistan-organized event -
UNITED NATIONS, July 31 (APP): Senior diplomats and UN officials at a highly appreciated Pakistan-sponsored panel discussion on the plight of refugees and migrants Thursday called for addressing the root causes of the massive human movements -- conflicts, persecution and poverty -- in a bid to end this grave humanitarian crisis.


World population to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, driven by growth in developing countries: UN -
UNITED NATIONS, July 30 (APP): The world's population is projected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050 and exceed 11 billion in 2100, with India expected to surpass China as the most populous around seven years from now and Nigeria overtaking the United States to become the world's third largest country around 35 years from now, according to a new United Nations report.


Newly found debris likely came from missing MH370: U.S. investigators -
NEW YORK, July 30 (APP): U.S. investigators have concluded that the piece of aircraft debris found Wednesday near a French island in the southern Indian Ocean came from a Boeing 777, raising the odds that it belongs to the mysteriously vanished Malaysian airlines flight MH370, The New York Times reported Thursday.

ECP issues elections schedule; nominations from Mar 24 PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, Mar 22 (APP): The Election Commission of Pakistan Friday issued the final schedule for general elections announcing that polls for National Assembly and provincial assemblies would be held on May 11, 2013. According to the schedule, the nomination papers of the candidates would be received from March 24 to 29, 2013 as the Returning Officers will issue the public notice a day earlier. The ECP  called upon the electors of the constituencies of the National Assembly and the Provincial Assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to elect their representatives from each of these constituencies to the general seats in accordance with the announced schedule. After receiving the nomination papers, the ECP would carry out the scrutiny of nomination papers from March 30 to April 5.

The ECP has set April 9 as the deadline for filing of appeals against decisions of the Returning Officers rejecting or accepting the nomination papers.
The Election Tribunals will decide the fate of these appeals by April 16. The candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations by April 17.
After thorough scrutiny, the Election Commission will publish the final revised list of candidates on April 18 which will follow the holding of elections on May 11, according to the schedule.
The ECP announced that the said schedule would also apply to the seats reserved for women and non-Muslims in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies of the Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Meanwhile, the Commission has announced that the offices of the Election Commission as well as the offices of District Returning Officers and Returning Officers will remain open on March 23, 24, 30, and 31.
Soon after the announcement of the election schedule, the ECP has also frozen the electoral rolls that would follow their final compilation as the process was already underway.
