Pak calls for boosting investment in children, UN marks 25th anniversary of child rights convention -
UNITED NATIONS, Nov 22 (APP): The United Nations marked the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by holding a special meeting of the General Assembly Friday to assess its progress, with Pakistan making a strong case for more investment in children to help them fully realize their human rights.


Winter aid from Pakistan for displaced Iraqis starts arriving in Kurdistan region: UN -
UNITED NATIONS, Nov 21 (APP):  The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is stepping up its efforts in Iraq to deliver winter aid to people displaced by this year's conflict, with the landing in northern Iraq's Kurdistan region the first in a series of flights from Pakistan carrying supplies aimed at mitigating the impact of the harsh months ahead.


Obama to visit India in January 2015 -
 WASHINGTON,  Nov 21 (APP): U.S. President Barack Obama will travel to India in January 2015 to participate in the Indian Republic Day celebration in New Delhi as chief guest, the White House announced Friday.



Bokhari urges world parliamentarians to back Palestinians' right to statehood -
UNITED NATIONS, Nov 21 (APP): Senate Chairman Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari who is leading Pakistan's parliamentary delegation to the annual Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the UN General Assembly, Friday called on world parliamentarians to raise their voice for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including statehood.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 21 (APP): A Pakistani delegate, speaking at a gathering of parliamentarians from around the world,  has urged the international community to support Pakistan's efforts aimed at curbing the discriminatory tendencies against the country's minorities so as to end communal violence.

PIA to start Quetta-Kandhar flights PDF Print E-mail
piac.jpgISLAMABAD, Nov 28 (APP): Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf Wednesday expressed the confidence that the new management of Pakistan International Airline Corporation (PIAC) would bring about a turn around in the national flag carrier with a new passenger friendly face.The Prime Minister made these observations during a briefing made to him on measures taken by the new management of PIAC to improve the operations of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation at Prime Minister’s House.The Prime Minister directed that all the grey areas must be addressed and loopholes plugged and economic viability of PIAC ensured.The Prime Minister further directed the PIAC to consider feasibility of running more flights to Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral.The Prime Minister was also informed by Managing Director PIAC, M. Junaid Yunus that a business plan of the corporation is being firmed up with emphasis on facilitating the passenger so that business can be attracted.
The business plan being worked out is being prepared with the objective of attaining a break even by 2013, he added. The present share of PIA in the international passenger business generating from Pakistan is 32 percent while PIA has a share of 71 percent in the domestic market, said the Managing Director PIAC.
The Prime Minister was also informed that PIAC has earned operational profit in September and October this year which sets the tone and pace of recovery.
The Managing Director PIAC informed the Prime Minister that PIA is acquiring the first airbus which will join in February 2013 followed by four in March 2013 and three in second half of 2013.
These narrow body aircrafts will be fuel efficient and lead to massive savings in fuel cost which presently constitute 55 percent of total revenue earned by the airlines.
The Prime Minister was also told that a proposal is under consideration to outsource non core operations to reduce employee to aircraft ratio which is presently 485 employees per aircraft.
The Prime Minister was informed that PIA will start flights on Quetta-Kandhar route from December 25 this year. This is the first time that a new destination has been initiated after a very long time in the history of airlines.
The Chairman, PIAC and Secretary Defence, Lt. General ® Asif Yasin Malik said that the new management envisages an airline which will neither be employee or government friendly but passenger friendly.
The meeting was also attended by high officials of the government.
