UN’s ME envoy ‘outraged’ by attack on world body’s Gaza compound -
UNITED NATIONS, Jan 28 (APP): The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Process, Robert Serry, has expressed outrage by the assault on the UN premises in Gaza on Wednesday.


Pakistan figures above regional countries on economic freedom index -
WASHINGTON, Jan 28 (APP): Pakistan has greater economic freedom than other major regional economies, the latest worldwide Index of Economic Freedom determines while taking into account improvements the country has made over the last year.


UN agency halt programme for repairs to Gaza's destroyed homes due to funds' shortage -
UNITED NATIONS, Jan 28 (APP): The United Nations agency tasked with assisting Palestinian refugees across the Middle East announced Tuesday that a major funding shortfall has forced the suspension of its cash assistance programme that would have helped families in Gaza repair  their homes destroyed by last year's Israeli bombing raids and provide rental subsidies to people left homeless in the enclave.



Over 1.1 billion tourists travelled abroad in 2014 - UN -
UNITED NATIONS, Jan 28 (APP): The number of international tourists reached 1.13 billion in 2014, 51 million more than in 2013, on trend for  the fifth consecutive year of above average growth since the 2009 economic crisis, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) announced today.



Winter storm largely spares New York, pounds Boston area -
NEW YORK, Jan 27 (APP): The winter storm, predicted to be one of the worst ever to hit New York City, failed to deliver much of a blow, but slammed New England—the region consisting of the states of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut --  burying the stretch with as much as two feet of snow.

Sufis’ message of tolerance, inclusion has universal relevance: Sherry PDF Print E-mail
WASHINGTON, Sept 23 (APP): Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Sherry Rehman told an American audience at a cultural event Saturday night that Sufism embraces the spirit of tolerance and inclusion, and its message is increasingly relevant in this age of competing ideologies. She was speaking at the Smithsonian Institute, where popular Pakistani Sufi singer Sanam Marvi gave a mesmerizing performance, attended by Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar. The new US ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson, senior American officials and a large number of Pakistani and American followers of the mystic poetry and music attended the performance by the acclaimed singer.
In her remarks, Ambassador Sheery Rehman made it clear that Sufism is not a sect of Islam.
“Its practice encapsulates the very essence of our faith,” the envoy said. “For over a decade now,” she said, “we have seen the marketplace of global ideas distorted by new walls of hatred and prejudice... This negativity causes many to lose hope in the project of peaceful civilizations, that instead of clashing, nurtures the best in humanity.
She said that Pakistan’s founding father, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, actively advocated a plural model of citizenship, asserting that all Pakistani citizens shall enjoy the same rights and privileges, regardless of their religious affiliation. Sherry Rehman explained to the attentive audience the  message of Sufism as she observed that “being grounded in the mystical connection between the individual and the divine, Sufism embraces the spirit of tolerance and inclusion in both its discourse and practice”.
This is one of the reasons why Sufi saints played a central role in the spread of Islam, especially in South Asia, making it the second biggest and the most practiced religion in the world, she added.
“The Sufi doctrine is simple and universal, that the light of God abides in the heart of each person. The Sufi ‘tariqa’ or the Sufi way guides us on the roads of the inner journey towards discovering the self, for the ultimate goal of reaching the divine light and wisdom that each one of us carries within.”
“What could, indeed, be a more appropriate and opportune time to think and reflect about the message of unity, peace, togetherness and patience exemplified by the life and teachings of Sufi saints and their philosophy of life?” Ambassador Rehman stressed.
