Woodrow Wilson Center awards Pakistan scholarship to economic journalist

WASHINGTON, May 22 (APP): The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, in collaboration with the Fellowship Fund for Pakistan (FFFP), has announced the appointment of Khurram Husain as the Wilson Center’s new Pakistan Scholar.Husain, a business and economic journalist working in Pakistan, will spend nine months in residence at the Wilson Center beginning September 3, 2013, working on a book on the political economy of reform in Pakistan over the past two decades, a news release said Tuesday. Husain has written for numerous media including the Express Tribune and his current affiliations include Dawn newspaper and the BBC. He has also taught at the prestigious Lahore University of Management Sciences.He will succeed Dr. Simbal Khan, the Wilson Center’s 2012-13 Pakistan Scholar. During her stay at the Center, Khan worked on a book looking at U.S.-Pakistani security ties since the 9/11 attacks.
Pak envoy calls Chinese premier’s visit “milestone”

BEIJING, May 21 (APP): Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s upcoming visit to
Pakistan will prove to be a milestone in the relationship between the two “old
friends,” Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Masood Khalid said in an interview.
During his first overseas tour as premier, Li’s choice of Pakistan as one
of his stops would “once again provide a great opportunity to renew the
time-honored friendship between the two countries,” Khalid said ahead of Li’s
visit on May 22-23.

BEIJING, May 21 (APP): Ahead of an official visit of Premier Li Keqiang to
Pakistan, a Chinese scholar has said that Pakistan can play an important role in
developing its relations with regional countries, including the Islamic world.
Premier Li, who is at present in India on his first leg of four countries’
visit, will arrive Pakistan on Wednesday. According to officials here, Premier
Li’s nine-day itinerary also included visiting Switzerland and Germany.
Pakistan backs Palestine’s bid for fresh move to resolve Mideast conflict

UNITED NATIONS, May 21 (APP): Pakistan has endorsed a call by Palestine’s lead negotiator for renewed international focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in an effort to correct the historic justice, paving the way for peace in the Middle East. “We understand the excruciating pain of Palestinians as they pass through these difficult times of occupation and extreme privation,” Ambassador Masood Khan told the Palestinian Rights Committee on Monday. “Continued attention of the international community is extremely important.” The Pakistani envoy spoke after Saeb Erakat, a prominent Palestinian official, said they were exerting every possible effort to ensure the success of current efforts to re-start peace negotiations with Israel. Calling on member states to make their positions on the issue clear, Erakat underlined how important it was that US Secretary of State John Kerry succeed in bringing about a resumption of talks.
UN calls for priority to public health amid competing global challenges

UNITED NATIONS, May 20 (APP): A senior UN official Monday called for
ensuring adequate attention and resources to public health for ensuring welfare
of the millions amid myriad global challenges, from climate change to food
insecurity.
“We are living in deeply troubled times,” said Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“In these troubled times, public health looks more and more like a
refuge, a safe harbour of hope that allows, and inspires, all countries to work
together for the good of humanity.”

democratic transition a few former, current players and administrators casting
doubts on the mechanism adopted by the PCB for the elections held in Islamabad on May 8 three-day before the General Elections in the country.
