UNITED NATIONS, Aug 17 (APP): Lakhdar Brahimi, a former Algerian foreign minister and an ex-UN special representative on Afghanistan, has been appointed as the United Nations-Arab League joint special representative for Syria, replacing Kofi Annan who has resigned, a UN spokesman announced Sunday. Brahimi, 78, a veteran diplomatic troubleshooter, formally accepted the post and will resume efforts for a diplomatic solution to Syria’s crisis, said Eduardo del Buey, deputy spokesman for Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said last week he would step down as the special envoy because he was unable to do his job with the U.N. Security Council hopelessly deadlocked over Syria.
