UN chief welcomes lifting of siege of Iraqi town; aid rushed -
UNITED NATIONS, Sept 2 (APP): With the siege on the northern Iraqi town of Amerli finally broken, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday expressed his appreciation to the Iraqi Security Forces, Kurdish Peshmerga, and others, who, with air support from the United States, helped avert a humanitarian disaster in the town.


UN chief 'alarmed' by Israel's big grab of Palestinian land -
UNITED NATIONS, Sept 1 (APP):  UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is "alarmed" by Sunday's announcement by Israeli authorities appropriating a swath of 990 acres in the West Bank and declaring the Palestinian area south of
Bethlehem to be Israeli "state lands."

WASHINGTON Sept 1 APP- The United States on Monday called for restraint by all sides in Pakistan's political crisis, saying protesters had a right to demonstrate peacefully but that it strongly opposed efforts to impose change through violence and destruction of property.


1,420 people killed in Iraqi violence in August: UN -
UNITED NATIONS, Sept 1 (APP): At least 1,420 Iraqis have been killed and  1,370 injured in terrorist attacks and sectarian violence during August, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said in a statement on Monday.

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 31 (APP): Stressing that the enforced disappearance of individuals by States constitutes an unacceptable violation of human rights, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has declared that the time has come for the end to this ‘abhorrent’ practice.

Pakistan committed to protection of religious freedoms: Sherry Rehman PDF Print E-mail
WASHINGTON, Aug 9 (APP): Pakistan is firmly committed to promotion  and protection of religious freedoms and the democratically elected Parliament and the present Government have been particularly active in pursuing this goal, the country’s ambassador to the United States Sherry Rehman said. She was talking to Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett, Chair of the US Commission on International Freedom, who called on the ambassador. Dr. Swett apprised Ambassador Rehman of her Commission’s work and interest in promoting religious freedoms around the world. 

She praised Ambassador Rehman for her personal commitment to the protection and promotion of religious freedom and minority rights in Pakistan.
Ambassador Rehman noted that the minorities make invaluable contributions to the development, peace and prosperity of Pakistan and the government is committed to fully harnessing their potential and contributions in all walks of life.
Ambassador Rehman noted that she was particularly pained to see the rise in religious intolerance across the globe including in the  United States. She stressed that interfaith harmony can be promoted  through collective and concerted efforts, which required greater understanding of each other’s sensitivities.
