Army wins national women cycling title
LAHORE, May 18 (APP): Pakistan Army won the title of the 10th  national women cycling championship here on Saturday at the cycling velodrome. Army’s riders added another gold to their previous four to emerge the winners of the three-day premier event held under the supervision of Pakistan Cycling Federation,Munawar Baseer Group.

Recent spot-fixing scandal has tarnished cricket’s image further: ex-players
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Former Pakistan cricketers feel that the recent spot-fixing scandal that has rocked ongoing Indian Premier has tarnished the image of the game of cricket. Erstwhile skipper Zaheer Abbas in an interview on Friday said that he was shocked by the scandal involving Indian Test player,  Sreesanth and two others—Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. “What worries me is that this apparently is just the tip of the iceberg as far as corruption in cricket is concerned. There have always been fears that the IPL was a soft target for bookmakers but no one took this seriously,” he said.

Army wins 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo C’ship
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Pakistan Army won the 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo Championship by clinching overall 17 gold, three silver and two bronze medals on Friday here at Liaquat Gymnasium. Army secured a total of 507 points. WAPDA remained second with 165 points, securing one gold, six silver and two bronze medals.

National athletics championship dedicated to Zakir Syed
LAHORE, May 17 (APP): Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) has decided to dedicate the 45th edition of the National Athletics Championship in the memory of late Syed Zakir Hussain Syed, a former director general of Pakistan Sports Board. The premier activity, both for men and women, will be organised May 24 at Jinnah stadium Islamabad and all the affiliated units of the AFP will take part, said a spokesman of AFP here on Friday. He said late Zakir rendered meritorious services for the cause of sports in the country and the AFP has decided to dedicate the championship to him to acknowledge his valuable contributions as a sports administrative. “Over 500 athletes belonging to the four provinces, AJ&K, FATA, Gilgit Baltistan and various services and departments will compete in the three-day sports “, he added.
 
Around 500 athletes to feature in National Athletics C’ship
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): The National Athletics Championship will explode into action from May 24 to 26 at Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad. Around 500 men and women athletes will chip in the three-day event, Secretary General, Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) Muhammad Zafar said on Friday. He said the championship had been dedicated to late Syed Zakir Hussain, former Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB).

Opener Sami shines for Pakistan in last warm-up match PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, Aug 8 (APP): Two-time former champion Pakistan warmed-up for its Saturday’s ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup opener against Afghanistan with a comfortable eight wickets victory over Papua New Guinea (PNG) in its last practice match in South Brisbane on Wednesday. Opener Sami Aslam stroked a fine century while Inam-ul-Haq returned unbeaten on 38 as Pakistan achieved an easy 195-run target with eight wickets and just over 17 overs to spare, says a press release issued here.

Sami clubbed 22 fours and 3 sixes in a 99-ball 132 while Inam’s 64-ball knock included four fours. The two batsmen added 146 runs for the second wicket after Captain Babar Azam had returned to the pavilion after scoring 10.
Earlier, Usman Qadir returned figures of three for 32 as PNG was restricted to 196 for six after being put into bat. Opener Lega Siaka with 46 was the top scorer while Nigel Boge (41 not out) and Dogodo Bau (37 not out) put on 91 runs for the unfinished seventh wicket in 15 overs.
The two sides will be in action on the opening day of the tournament on Saturday. Pakistan will play Afghanistan on the Sunshine Coast while PNG will face off Zimbabwe at Endeavour Park 1 in Townsville.
