George Mason University welcomes Pakistani NUST team -
FAIRFAX (Virginia), June 18 (APP):  George Mason University on Monday welcomed a group of Pakistan faculty from National University of Sciences and Technology at the start of a three-week course that aims at sharing best practices in teaching and research.Dr. Peter N. Stearns, Provost and University Professor, Dr. Mark R.  Ginsberg,  Dean College of Education and Human Development,  Prof. Anne Schiller,Vice President for Global Strategies, Siddique Sheikh, Member GMU Board of Visitors (director), Dr. Eirini Gouleta, Associate Professor International Education, and Dr Hmood Ur Rehman, Head, Department of Electrical Engineering, NUST, and leader of the Pakistani team, addressed the inaugural reception. Ambassador-at-Large Riffat Mahmood and Mrs. Shaista Riffat Mahmood also attended the event.As part of the continuing partnership, a George Mason University delegation would visit the NUST in a few months and attend a convention as well.


China rejects spy claims against Snowden -
BEIJING, June 18 (APP): A Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman described as “sheer nonsense” claims that a former U.S. intelligence contractor who is hiding in Hong Kong was an agent of China.Spokeaperson Hua Chunying made the comment at a daily press briefing Monday after former U.S. vice president Dick Cheney expressed suspicion Sunday that Edward Snowden chose Hong Kong because he was an agent of China.“This is sheer nonsense,” Xinhua news quoted Hua.The 29-year-old former CIA-employee fled Hong Kong on May 20 after exposingtwo classified U.S. National Security Agency surveillance programs, one collecting U.S. phone records and the other mining Internet data.In Hong Kong, he provided The Guardian with top-secret documents that has led to a series of revelations about the extent of U.S. surveillance, to which several nations, including U.S. allies, have demanded explanations.


Nine arrested, 14 7-Eleven convenience stores seized in fraud, illegal immigrant scheme -
NEW YORK, June 17 (APP): The US officials said that they had arrested  nine owners and managers of 7-Eleven convenience stores in New York and Virginia on Monday for fraud involving exploitation of immigrants from Pakistan and the Philippines, in part by paying them using the stolen Social Security numbers of a child and three dead people. Most of the defendants were arrested early Monday as federal authorities  raided 14 franchise stores. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were executing search warrants at about 30 other stores across the country suspected of similar infractions, the officials said at a news conference in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City.


Pakistani-American professionals & entrepreneurs launch body to assist investors -
ARLINGTON (Virginia) , June 16 (APP): A newly formed organization, Overseas Pakistanis Investment Corporation, hosted a town hall meeting with Pakistani-Americans on ways to explore and encourage investment opportunities in Pakistan.The OPIC board of directors, comprising highly skilled Pakistani-American professionals and entrepreneurs, explained objectives of the organization and discussed with members of the community, media and experts, a broad range of ideas that may facilitate prospective investors.The meeting was very useful and we decided to hold a two-day conference in mid September in Washington, D.C., Ms. Asma Bajwa, a noted New York-based architect, who is Director Communications of the organization, said after the town hall held at Arlington Library in Virginia.


UN secretary-general congratulates Hasan Rowhani on election as Iran’s President -
UNITED NATIONS, June 16 (APP): UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday congratulated Hasan Rowhani on his election as the next President of Iran, and commended the country’s high turnout to the polls.“The Secretary-General has been closely following the eleventh presidential election in Iran held on June 14 and notes with satisfaction the reported high turnout,” Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement.“He extends his warm congratulations to Mr. Hasan Rowhani, the confirmed winner.” According to media reports, more than 70 per cent of some 50 million  eligible voters took part on Friday’s elections.The statement said The Secretary-General intends to remain engaged with Iranian authorities and with the President-elect on issues relevant to the international community and the welfare of the Iranian people.“[Ban] will continue encouraging Iran to play a constructive role in regional and international affairs,” the statement added.

KARACHI, Jun 17 (APP): Pakistan batsman Asad Shafiq returned here on Monday from London after Champions Trophy debacle in England where Pakistan lost all their three matches. According to reports, team manager Naveed Akram Cheema some team staff and players like, Kamran Akmal, Muhammad Irfan, Asad Ali etc are due to arrive in Lahore on Tuesday.

Cricket: Pietersen confirms Surrey return
LONDON, June 16, (APP/AFP) - England batsman Kevin Pietersen has confirmed he will return to cricket with Surrey in their County Championship fixture away to Yorkshire next week. The 32-year-old South Africa-born shotmaker has not played since March because of a knee injury and now faces a race against time to prove his fitness for the first Ashes Test against Australia at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge ground on July 10. Surrey’s match against Yorkshire, which starts on Friday, has long been pencilled in as the fixture where Pietersen would return to action.

Football: World Cup winner Flohe dies
BERLIN, June 16, (APP/AFP) - Former West German international Heinz Flohe, who was a member of the squad that won the 1974 World Cup, has died aged 65 after a long illness in his home town of Euskirchen, it was reported by the Cologne Express on Sunday. The former attacking midfielder, who was capped 39 times, had been in a coma since suffering a stroke in May 2010. Flohe, who also was part of the West German squads in the 1976 European championships and 1978 World Cup finals, spent most of his career with Cologne with whom he won the domestic double in 1978, having already won the German Cup in 1968 and 1977.

 
Cricket: Nathan McCullum joins Glamorgan
CARDIFF, United Kingdom, June 16, (APP/AFP) - New Zealand all-rounder Nathan McCullum is to play for Glamorgan in this year’s English domestic Twenty20 competition. The 32-year-old off-spinner is currently playing for New Zealand in the Champions Trophy—and was included in the Black Caps side due to play England in a Group A match at Welsh county Glamorgan’s Cardiff headquarters on Sunday. “I’m looking forward to joining up with the Glamorgan squad at the end of this month,” McCullum, man-of-the-match in New Zealand’s win over Sri Lanka in Cardiff last weekend, said in a statement issued by the county.
