Pakistan backs Palestine’s bid for fresh move to resolve Mideast conflict

UNITED NATIONS, May 21 (APP): Pakistan has endorsed a call by Palestine’s lead negotiator for renewed international focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in an effort to correct the historic justice, paving the way for peace in the Middle East. “We understand the excruciating pain of Palestinians as they pass through these difficult times of occupation and extreme privation,” Ambassador Masood Khan told the Palestinian Rights Committee on Monday. “Continued attention of the international community is extremely important.” The Pakistani envoy spoke after Saeb Erakat, a prominent Palestinian official, said they were exerting every possible effort to ensure the success of current efforts to re-start peace negotiations with Israel. Calling on member states to make their positions on the issue clear, Erakat underlined how important it was that US Secretary of State John Kerry succeed in bringing about a resumption of talks.
UN calls for priority to public health amid competing global challenges

UNITED NATIONS, May 20 (APP): A senior UN official Monday called for
ensuring adequate attention and resources to public health for ensuring welfare
of the millions amid myriad global challenges, from climate change to food
insecurity.
“We are living in deeply troubled times,” said Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“In these troubled times, public health looks more and more like a
refuge, a safe harbour of hope that allows, and inspires, all countries to work
together for the good of humanity.”
33 dead, 12 missing in Soth China storms

(APP): Thirty three people have died and 12 others were reported missing in the latest round of rain and hailstorms that have swept south China, said the country's civil affairs and disaster reduction authorities. The rainstorms have triggered flooding and landslides in some places, sources with the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction said Thursday.
Obama to speak on counter-terrorism, drone policy

WASHINGTON, May 19 (APP): U.S. President Barack Obama will address his
administration’s plan in a speech this week to bring counter-terrorism policies,
including controversial drone program and Guantanamo Bay prison in line with legal framework, an American newspaper reported Sunday.
The Washington Post said Obama would deliver a speech Thursday at the
National Defence University and according to a White House official, “discuss our
broad counterterrorism policy, including our military, diplomatic, intelligence
and legal efforts.”
Pakistanis remarkably tolerant, least racist: Survey

WASHINGTON, May 18 (APP): Pakistanis are among the most racially tolerant
people in the world, despite having less economic development and being located
in the region housing some of the least racially tolerant populations, findings
of a survey reveal.
According to World Values Survey, which has been measuring global attitudes
and opinions for decades, only 6.5 percent of Pakistanis object to a neighbor of
a different race.
In only three of 81 surveyed countries by Swedish economists, more than 40
percent of respondents said they would not want a neighbor of a different race,
a report in The Washington Post said citing conclusions of the survey.

KARACHI, May 21 (APP): Former Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Lt. Gen (Retd) Tauqir Zia has demanded ad hoc arrangements in the present set-up of the board.
When the incumbent management of the PCB is celebrating the
democratic transition a few former, current players and administrators casting
doubts on the mechanism adopted by the PCB for the elections held in Islamabad on May 8 three-day before the General Elections in the country.

PM assures fair, transparent elections
ATHMUQAM, (AJK) July 18 (APP): Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf Wednesday said the government would ensure free, fair and transparent general election and no one should have any doubt about it.
“The process would further strengthen democracy in the country. It will be transparent and open for all to prove their prowess and popularity amongst the masses,” the Prime Minister told a large public gathering at the scenic Athmuqam, some 84 kilometres from Muzaffarabad in Azad Jammu Kashmir.
He was addressing after inaugurating the Muzaffarabad-Athmuqam Highway and launch of the mobile service of Special Communication Organisation (SCO) in the area.
