Pakistan urges implementation of counter-terrorism strategy focusing on root causes PDF Print E-mail
UNITED NATIONS, June 29 (APP): Pakistan Thursday called for “balanced implementation” of the U.N. Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy that addresses the root causes of terrorism, including prolonged unresolved conflicts, foreign occupation, and denial of the right to self-determination. “Coherence and coordination are necessary for the success of this fight (against terrorism),” Ambassador Raza Bashir Tarar, Pakistan’s deputy permanent representative to UN, told the General Assembly as member states began the third review of the Strategy, the wide-ranging framework to defeat what is known as as a ‘hydra-headed scourge’. Adopted by the Assembly in September 2006, the Strategy is based on four pillars: tackling the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism; preventing and combating terrorism; building States’ capacity to prevent and combat terrorism and to strengthen the role of the UN system in that regard; ensuring respect for human rights for all and the rule of law as the fundamental basis for the fight against terrorism.
