Pakistan committed to strengthen Intellectual property rights: Hameed Afridi |

ISLAMABAD, June 27 (APP): Intellectual Property Organization (IPO)-Pakistan is committed to trengthening Intellectual Property Rights laws and legislation in this regard is being done through parliament to promote businesses and restore the confidences of the investors in the country. This was stated by Chairman IPO-Pakistan Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi while addressing the media consultants forum on Intellectual Property Programme Rights (IPR), and the European Union (EU) funded Trade Related Technical Assistance (TRTA II) Programme here. Director General IPO Sajjad Ahmad Bhutta, Executive Director Umardad Afridi and media representatives also attended the forum.

Session was organized on the eve of visit of Mansur Raza, Deputy
Director, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)- Asia pacific
region.
Afridi told the participants that IPO-Pakistan has moved into high gear by initiating sold steps for IP infrastructure development, capacity building and promoting linkages with all the stakeholders.
Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi apprised
the participants about the major achievements of IPO-Pakistan in
connection with approval of IPO Ordinance 2012, Digitized Publication of
Trademark Journal, announcement of Benazir Hall of Fame, bringing IP
registries under one roof, signing of agreements with research and
business representative organizations, opening of IPO facilitation
desks,establishment of dedicated IP tribunals, formulation of IP policy
board.
He said with the support of
European Union and TRTA II Programme, implemented by United Nations
Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in association with WIPO, a
number of professionals nominated by the stakeholders were imparted
advance training about IP related matters which has helped to improve
their managerial and technical skills.
He also informed about the administrative and legal reforms adopted to update the service delivery system according to the required standard besides initiating consultation
process with stakeholders for signing patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)
and Madrid Protocol with the objective to facilitate the business
community and IP right holders in becoming more competitive and
obtaining greater benefits from their IP assets.
The Chairman IPO said protection of property rights must be enforced by the enforcement agencies to encourage foreign and local investors.
In this regard, he said an
international enforcement agencies conference will be held here in
collaboration with Ministry of Interior soon to further strengthen the
enforcement of IPO laws for the benefit of the country.
Highlighting the importance of IPO-Pakistan , he said that this organization was necessary to promote business and restore investors confidence for the socio economic development of the country.
He informed that participants that
IPO-Pakistan offices would soon be established in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and
Balochistan provinces to facilitate the businesses registration and
protect their property rights in the country.
He on the occasion thanked EU ,
WIPO for their support and cooperation in the promotion of Intellectual
property rights in the country.
He expressed the hope that through
strengthening of IPO-Pakistan and enforcement of Intellectual Property
Rights laws would boost image of the country at global level besides
boosting national economy.
Sajjad Bhutta, talking to media correspondents said that all possible opportunities were being explored to make IPO a vibrant organization by ensuring active participation of stakeholders.
He said that after brain storming
sessions with experts, a national policy framework is being prepared to
promote the core functions of IP.
He also mentioned the cooperation
of EU, WIPO and IP sister organizations to enhance the working
capabilities of IP professionals in Pakistan.
Sajjad Bhutta asked the IP related persons and organizations to join hands with IPO Pakistan to contribute for public awareness and IP rights protection in the country.
Mansur Raza responding to questions
clarified that WIPO is providing financial and technical support to all
the member countries for capacity building and institutional
strengthening.
He appreciated the contributions of IPO-Pakistan for initiating positive steps for effective coordination among the stakeholders besides active participation in all the international forums.
He also thanked the EU for financing the important TRTA II programme.
