Pakistan can play key role in developing China’s ties with regional countries, Islamic world -
BEIJING, May 21 (APP): Ahead of an official visit of Premier Li Keqiang to Pakistan, a Chinese scholar has said that Pakistan can play an important role in developing its relations with regional countries, including the Islamic world.  Premier Li, who is at present in India on his first leg of  four countries’ visit, will arrive Pakistan on Wednesday. According to officials here, Premier Li’s nine-day itinerary also included visiting Switzerland and Germany. 


Pakistan backs Palestine’s bid for fresh move to resolve Mideast conflict -
UNITED NATIONS, May 21 (APP): Pakistan has endorsed a call by Palestine’s lead negotiator for renewed international focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in an effort to correct the historic  justice, paving the way for peace in the Middle East. “We understand the excruciating pain of Palestinians as they pass through these difficult times of occupation and extreme privation,” Ambassador Masood Khan told the Palestinian Rights Committee on Monday. “Continued attention of the international community is extremely important.” The Pakistani envoy spoke after Saeb Erakat, a prominent Palestinian official, said they were exerting every possible effort to ensure the success of current efforts to re-start peace negotiations with Israel. Calling on member states to make their positions on the issue clear,  Erakat underlined how important it was that US Secretary of State John Kerry succeed in bringing about a resumption of talks.


UN calls for priority to public health amid competing global challenges -
UNITED NATIONS, May 20 (APP): A senior UN official Monday called for  ensuring adequate attention and resources to public health for ensuring welfare of the millions amid myriad global challenges, from climate change to food insecurity.  “We are living in deeply troubled times,” said Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).  “In these troubled times, public health looks more and more like a  refuge, a safe harbour of hope that allows, and inspires, all countries to work together for the good of humanity.”


33 dead, 12 missing in Soth China storms -
BEIJING, May 20 (APP): Thirty three people have died and 12 others were  reported missing in the latest round of rain and hailstorms that have swept south China, said the country's civil affairs and disaster reduction authorities. The rainstorms have triggered flooding and landslides in some places,  sources with the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction said Thursday.


Obama to speak on counter-terrorism, drone policy -
WASHINGTON, May 19 (APP): U.S. President Barack Obama will address his  administration’s plan in a speech this week to bring counter-terrorism policies, including controversial drone program and Guantanamo Bay prison in line with legal framework, an American newspaper reported Sunday. The Washington Post said Obama would deliver a speech Thursday at the National Defence University and according to a White House official, “discuss our broad counterterrorism policy, including our military, diplomatic, intelligence and legal efforts.”

Football bribe: 2 ex-soccer chiefs get 10-1/2 years sentence PDF Print E-mail
BEIJING, June 13 (APP): Two former Chinese soccer chiefs were sentenced on Wednesday to more than a decade in jail for bribery. Nan Yong, the ex-director of the Chinese Football Administrative Center, was handed a 10-and-a-half-year term by a court in the northeast city of Tieling for taking bribes worth more than 1.48 million yuan (about 235,000 U.S. dollars) between 1999 and 2009. According to Xinhua news Agency, Nan, who was credited with leading China into their only World Cup finals in 2002, was also fined 200,000 yuan (about 31,340 U.S. dollars) with his illegal gains confiscated.

At a different court in Dandong city, Nan’s predecessor Xie Yalong  was sentenced to 10 and ½ years in prison for accepting bribes totaling 1.36 million yuan (about 214,000 U.S. dollars), reports Xinhua news.
Xie, who claimed during April’s court session that he had been tortured into confession, which was later denied by Liaoning police, was also fined 200,000 yuan (31,340 U.S. dollars).
Nan and Xie told the courts they need to consult with their respective attorneys to decide whether to appeal the verdicts.
They were among the 11 people who are receiving punishments Wednesday for their parts in the match-fixing and gambling scandal exposed two years ago.
Four former Chinese international players - Shen Si, Qi Hong, Jiang Jin and Li Ming, charged with taking a total of 8 million yuan (about 1.27 million U.S. dollars) to fix a domestic league game, also received jail sentence.
