New paradigm needed to ensure global job creation and economic progress:UN officials -
UNITED NATIONS, May 17 (APP): Top UN officials Thursday called for establishing a new paradigm for growth that ensures social inclusiveness, job opportunities for all, and more accountability from the financial sector to tackle the ongoing global economic crisis.“It is time to recognize that human capital and natural capital are every bit as important as financial capital,” said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his remarks to the General Assembly’s high-level thematic debate on The State  of the World Economy and Finance and its Impact on Development, taking place at UN Headquarters in New York.“Let us face the facts: the old model is broken. We need to create a new one—a new model for dynamic growth,” Ban, one of the meeting’s co-chairs, said.


China against EU aviation emissions levy -
BEIJING, May 17 (APP): Opposing the European Union (EU) carbon levy on air travel, China Thursday emphasised the issue should be address through multilateral consultations. The EU’s unilateral decision to impose the levy has aroused “strong and broad dissatisfaction from non-EU countries,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a routine press briefing. According to recent media reports quoting EU Commissioner for Climate Change Connie Hedegaard, some 1,200 airlines have agreed to submit emissions data, although eight Chinese and two Indian airlines have not, “We have no information on how many airlines have handed over the data to the EU, but none of the governments in contact with China accept the EU’s moves,” according to Hong.


Maternal deaths continue to decline but more progress needed: UN report -
UNITED NATIONS, May 17 (APP): The number of women dying of pregnancy  and childbirth related complications has almost halved in 20 years, according to new estimates released by the United Nations. The report, entitled Trends in Maternal Mortality: 1990 to 2010, shows that from 1990 to 2010, the annual number of maternal deaths dropped from more than 543,000 to 287,000, a decline of 47 per cent.  While substantial progress has been achieved in almost all regions,  many countries especially in sub-Saharan Africa will fail to  reach the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of reducing maternal deaths by 75 per cent from 1990 to 2015.


Pakistan U.N. envoy meets Liberian president in Monrovia -
UNITED NATIONS, May 17 (APP): Pakistan’s U.N.  Ambassador Abdullah  Hussain Haroon, who is currently on a visit to Liberia as chairman of the U.N. Security Council Sanctions Committee on Liberia, met Liberian  President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in Manrovia on Wednesday, according to a press releaseof Pakistan Mission to the U.N. in New York.  Ambassador Haroon appreciated the role played by President Sirleaf  in bringing Liberia out of the civil war and restoring stability in the country, the press release said.


Hypertension and diabetes on the rise worldwide: UN report -
UNITED NATIONS, May 16 (APP): The number of people with high blood pressure and diabetes is drastically increasing in both developed and developing countries, according to a United Nations report released Wednesday.“This report is further evidence of the dramatic increase in the conditions that trigger heart disease and other chronic illnesses, particularly in low- and middle-income countries,” said the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Margaret Chan.“In some African countries, as much as half the adult population has high blood pressure.” WHO’s World Health Statistics 2012 report, which includes data from 194 countries, states that one in three adults worldwide has raised blood pressure and one in 10 suffers from diabetes.

Qurashi club reach to q-final of NBP T20 Inter-Club Cricket
PESHAWAR, May 17 (APP): Qurashi club beat Young Checkerkot Kohat by 60 runs and took berth into the semi-finals of the ongoing NBP Twenty20 District Kohat Inter-Club Cricket Tournament being played at Kohat Cricket Stadium on Thursday.Qurashi club won the toss and elected to bat first by setting up a convincing target of 196 runs for the loss of five wicket with openers Shakeel Khan hammered a cracking half-century 50 runs with seven boundaries, Aleem Khan struck another cracking 39 runs with four boundaries, Farood Ahmad made 35 runs not out with three boundaries and two sixes and Sarfaraz scored 35 runs not out with five boundaries.For Young Checkerkot Kohat Safeer Ullah claimed three wickets while Adil Murad got two wickets.

 
Pakistan No. 1 Aqeel Khan reaches Chief Minister Tennis Cup semi-finals
PESHAWAR, May 17 (APP): Pakistan No 1 ranking player and top seeded Aqeel Khan entered into the semi-finals after recording victory against Ahmad Babar in the first quarter-finals of the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Open Tennis Cup being played here at Grassy Courts of Garrison Club on Thursday.Secretary Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Syed Jamal Uddin Shah was the chief guest on this occasion. Director General Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Board Engr. Khanzeb Khan, Director Sports Tariq Mehmood, President Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Lawn Tennis Association Dr. Tahir, Secretary Dr. Shahjehan and large number of game fans were also present on this occasion and witnessed the thrilling quarter-finals.
 
Hockey team to leave for Malaysia on Friday
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): A 19-member Pakistan hockey team is due to leave for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from Lahore on Friday night to take part in the Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Tournament to be held in the Malaysian city of Ipoh from May 24 to June 3. The seven-team event will bring Pakistan face-to-face with other gold-medal contenders for the London Olympics in July.  Apart from hosts Malaysia, Pakistan will face India, New Zealand, South Korea, as well as their Olympic pool opponents Great Britain and Argentina. Pakistan will open their campaign against Argentina on May 24.  They will take on New Zealand in their second match on May 27.
 
Pak team capable of beating Sri Lanka
LAHORE, May 16 (APP)- Pakistan cricket team’s foreign coach, Dav Whatmore said on Wednesday that Pakistan team is capable of beating Sri Lanka despite hosts home ground and crowd advantages.“ Definitely the hosts will be having their own advantages (home ground and crowd) but my team is fully prepared to take on Lankan challenge in a decent way by exhibiting professionalism”,he told reporters after Pak team training session for the build up of the team for its tour later this month.“Lankan are always tough to beat in their own backyard and their (Lankan) weather will be also be tough but we are also training in hot conditions and there should not be any problem to adjust with the conditions there.
 
Jamshed dropped for Sri Lanka series
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Pakistan opening batsman Nasir Jamshed has been dropped out for next month’s Twenty20 and one-day series against Sri Lanka due to fractured finger, a private news channel reported.According to details Jamshed fractured his left index finger during a club match last week and the “doctors have advised him rest of 4-6 weeks.” PCB has not named a replacement for Jamshed.Jamshed, 22, has played 16 one-day internationals and scored his maiden century against India during the Asia Cup in March.Pakistan will play two Twenty20s, five ODIs and three tests against Sri Lanka, the series will begin with a Twenty20 in the southern port city of Hambantota on June 1.

KARACHI, Sept 23 (APP): Ismat Siddiqui and Dr Fauzia Siddiqui, mother and sister of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, currently facing imprisonment in the United States, called on Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani here on Friday.Prime Minister Gilani directed Interior Minister Rehman Malik, who was present in the meeting, to take all necessary steps to help secure the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui.Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah were also present on the occasion.
