Pakistan united against extremism, pursuing policy of peaceful neighborhood: Ambassador -
WASHINGTON, April 7 (APP) Pakistan is witnessing a silent revolution with the nation united against extremism and the government's foreign policy focused on building a 'peaceful neighborhood' to pursue a common agenda of peace and development, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, Jalil Abbas Jilani said on Thursday. Speaking at Georgetown University to mark the inauguration meeting of the South Asia Policy and Research Initiative (SAPRI), in the capital D.C., the ambassador said the theme of the first meeting 'South Asia: Re-imagining development for a better future' was highly appropriate in the view of the important development taking place in Pakistan, the region and at the global level.

Global food prices slightly up in March, annual cereal production outlook robust - UN -
UNITED NATIONS, Apr 7 (APP):  World cereal production in 2016 is set to reach 2,521 million tonnes, just 0.2 per cent below last year's and the third-highest on record, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said Thursday. Large inventory levels and relatively sluggish global demand mean that market conditions for staple food grains appear stable for at least another season, the agency's latest Cereal Supply and Demand Brief predicts. According to the FAO Food Price Index released Thursday, overall food prices rose 1 per cent in March on the month, as soaring sugar prices and continued increase in palm oil quotations more than offset plunging dairy product prices.

UNITED NATIONS, April 7 (APP): The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has condemned Wednesday’s large scale home demolitions by Israeli authorities in the Bedouin refugee community of Um al Khayr in the South Hebron Hills. As a result, according to UNRWA, 31 Palestine refugees, including 16 children were rendered homeless in a community that has endured several rounds of demolitions and often faced harassment from the nearby illegal settlement of Karmel. Already this year, over 700 Palestinians have been displaced by Israeli demolitions in the West Bank.

UN health chief urges action to halt the rising tide of diabetes -
UNITED NATIONS, Apr 6 (APP): The number of people living with diabetes has nearly quadrupled since 1980 to 422 million adults, most living in developing countries, a 'dramatic rise' mainly driven by overweight and obesity, the U.N. World Health organization (WHO) has announced ahead of World Health Day. To mark World Health Day (7 April), which celebrates WHO'S founding in 1948, the agency is issuing a call for action on diabetes. In its first-ever Global report on diabetes, WHO highlights the need to step up prevention and treatment of the disease. Measures needed to tackle the disease include expanding health-promoting environments to reduce diabetes risk factors, like physical inactivity and unhealthy diets, and strengthening national capacities to help people with diabetes receive the treatment and care they need to manage their conditions.
