Pakistani students graduated from AIT -
BANGKOK, May 24 (APP): Nineteen Pakistani students have completed Masters and Ph.D programmes at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and were awarded degrees at 119th AIT Graduation Ceremony held in Bangkok on Friday.The graduation ceremony was attended by Thai dignitaries, members of AIT Board of Trustees, AIT administration and faculty, and representatives of diplomatic corps. Pakistan’s Ambassador to Thailand, Sohail Mahmood, was also present on the occasion.A total of 9 Pakistanis completed Ph.D degrees mainly in engineering-related subjects. The graduating students belonged to various disciplines including urban environment management, information management, industrial and manufacturing engineering, micro electronic and embedded system, food engineering and bio-process technologies, telecommunications, computer science, remote sensing and GIS, and business administration.


Obama vows drone oversight;says US rebuilding ties after unilateral Abbottabad raid -
WASHINGTON, May 23 (APP): In a significant shift from his first-term covert counterterrorism policies, President Barack Obama Thursday unveiled a new strategy, saying civilian casualties in drone strikes haunt him and that Washington is in the process of rebuilding relations with Pakistan.Obama’s new “comprehensive” strategy sets out clear rules for use of lethal force against suspected terrorists, who pose threat to the United States and in a circumstance when they cannot be captured.However in a speech, Obama indicated  that in the Afghan theater Washington would continue to wage drone strikes against high-level al-Qaeda targets and those intending to attack U.S. forces deployed in the Afghanistan at least until the American forces are withdrawn from the country.In a major speech at the National Defense University, Obama touched on some controversial aspsects of the US counterterrorism operations. He also renewed his resolve to close down Guantanamo Bay and urged Congress to lift the restrictions on detainee transfers from GTMO.


New US policy to sharply curtail drones outside war zones like Pakistan: Report -

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, May 23 (APP): The new U.S. policy on drones is likely to curtail instances when drones can be used to attack militant targets in places outside of war zones like Pakistan and Yemen, a major American newspaper reported Thursday. A new classified policy guidance signed by President Barack Obama will sharply curtail the instances when unmanned aircraft can be used to attack in places that are not overt war zones, countries like Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, The New York Times reported hours ahead of President Obama’s counter terrorism speech.



Pak, China friendship is “Unbreakable”: Spokesman FM -
BEIJING, May 23 (APP): The on-going visit of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to Pakistan will further add impetus to the relationship between the two countries as spokesman foreign ministry here Thursday declared the bond of relations as “unbreakable”. The visit speaks that China Pakistan relations is “unbreakable”, spokesman Hong Lei said and asserted that friendship between the two countries withstood the test of time and risen above the changes of the times. Hong Lei expressed these views, while responding to a question at  regular press conference on Premier Li visits to India and Pakistan.


Pakistan draws attention to threat to Al-Aqsa; urges resumption of Israeli-Palestinian talks -
UNITED NATIONS, May 23 (APP): Pakistan told the Security Council Wednesday that the continuing Israeli excavations and tunnelling under the Al-Aqsa Mosque were threatening the whole structure, and called for early resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.“A 3,000-meter long underground grid is systematically eroding antiquities,” Ambassador Masood khan said after a briefing on the regional situation by Robert Serry, U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, according to council sources.“The whole structure is being threatened,” the Pakistani envoy added.In his remarks, Serry warned the 15-member body that the coming weeks would be critical on two major diplomatic fronts negotiations to halt the increasingly bloody crisis in Syria, and ending the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Masood Khan lauded the efforts of US Secretary of State John Kerry to get the Israeli and Palestinian negotiators to restart their crucial peace talks.

National Under-16 Football C’ship from June 7
ISLAMABAD, May 24 (APP): The Pakistan Football Federation has decided to hold National Under-16 Football Championship-2013 at Arifwala, District Pakpattan from June 7-17 instead of Okara Football Academy on May 31. A total of 12 teams will compete in this Championship in which eight teams are from Provincial and Regional Teams like Punjab Football Association, KP Football Association, Balochistan Football Association, Sindh Football Association, Islamabad Football Association, Azad Jammu and Kashmir Football Association, FATA Football Association and Gilget Baltistan Football Association) and 3 Youth Coaches Teams from (Karachi, Quetta, Lahore and Peshawar), said a press release here Friday.

Chief of Naval Staff Amateur Golf Cup from Friday
ISLAMABAD, May 23 (APP): Chief of the Naval Staff Amateur Golf Cup will  commence from Friday at Margalla Greens Golf Club (MGGC) Islamabad. The best amateur golfers around the country including senior, junior and ladies category will feature in the three-day event.  The opening ceremony of the event was held on Thursday at Margalla  Greens Golf Club Islamabad. Rear Admiral Athar Mukhtar, Patron PN Golf and Vice President Margalla Greens Golf Club was the chief guest on the occasion. The main match would be played amongst amateurs over 54 holes during the three days 18 holes each day.  Amateurs with handicap 12 and below will participate in the match. It  has been decided to give the participation rights to all those having the handicap up to 12 strokes.

AFP dedicates National Athletics C’ship to late Syed Zakir Hussain
ISLAMABAD, May 23 (APP): The Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) will  pay tributes to former Director General Pakistan Sports Board, late Syed Zakir Hussain by holding the 45th National Athletics Championships in his memory.  The National Athletics Championship will explode into action on Friday at Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad. Speaking at a press conference President AFP Lt. Gen. (Retd) Akram Sahi said that late Syed Zakir Hussain was an outstanding sports administrator, sports lover and writer and throughout his life had a positive and principled approach towards the promotion of national sports in the country.

Saleh top seed in Asian Snooker 6-Red Championship
KARACHI, May 23 (APP): Newly crowned Asian Snooker Champion, Saleh Muhammad Muhammadi of Afghanistan has been top seeded for the Asian Snooker 6-Red Championship which goes into action in Qatar from Friday. Saleh, formerly of Pakistan earlier this month won the Jubilee Insurance 29th Asian Snooker Championship held in Karachi by beating Omar Al-Kojah of Syria in the final. Pakistan’s Muhammad Sajjad, a 2010 Asian Snooker Championship finalist is seeded four while Pakistan’s current World Champion Muhammad Asif is seeded sixth according to draws and seeding received from Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports (ACBS).

Asif confident of Pakistan doing well in Asian Team Snooker
KARACHI, May 22 (APP): Reigning World Champion Muhammad Asif was confident of doing well in inaugural Asian Team Snooker and 6-Red Snooker Championship being held Doha (Qatar) from May 24 to 30. “All our players like Sajjad, Hamza and Majid are in a good nick and are in the best frame of mind to do well in Doha event”, Muhammad Asif told APP in an interview on Wednesday.

LAHORE, Nov 24 (APP) - Pakistani American, Nabeel Ahmed who stepped down as the Senior Vice President of USACA, will be contesting for the office of President during the elections of of the body March next year Nabeel,the only Senior Vice President of USACA, resigned few days ago after expressing frustration and confusion on the actions or lack of actions of some important members of USACA under the President Dainty’s leadership.“Yes, Nabeel has made up his mind to contest the election and surely he will be contesting for the Presidentship of USACA “,said the sources close to Nabeel while talking to APP from Detroit on Wednesday.They said Nabeel has decided to contest the elections in the larger interest of USA cricket and to safeguard the future of cricket in America.

As the SVP USACA,Nabeel contributed a lot in the overall development of the game besides sponsoring a number of cricket events at different levels and his passion and services for the cause of USA cricket are known to every cricket related person in America.
“ Nabeel was not happy the way, USACA was being run by the President and Chief Executive Officer Don Lockerbie who was sacked with immediate effect hours before a board meeting in Florida last week “,they added.
In his resignation Nabeel wrote “ My resignation is out of protest at the lack of action by the important members of the Board, the Executive, and division in the Board. My desire was to unify the board so that it can take united stand on any given issue but unfortunately due to the division in the board it was not possible. I tried my best but I did not succeed”.
The sources claimed Nabeel enjoys the support of majority of the important members of the USACA who has assured him their all out support if he comes forward and contest the Presidential elections of the body.
They said the USACA board’s finances remain a concern, and despite official denials it is widely believed the ill-fated tournament in Florida in May featuring New Zealand and Sri Lanka landed USACA with considerable losses.
“ He (Nabeel) was not happy with all that he tried to raise this issue and other issues pertaining to the promotion of cricket in USA in Board’s meeting time and again but the sitting President and the outgoing Chief Executive did not take measures to address Nabeel’s grievances “,said the sources.
They said to run the USACA on professional lines and to start an IPL-type tournament and to hold international tournaments at American soil requires a team of professionals and devoted individuals who can make benefit from the support the Games Ruling Body,The ICC has extended to USACA to promote cricket and to have international cricketing events in USA.
“ We are confident that Nabeel will win the next elections because he has the vision and ideas to duly fit in the role of President and to do what has not done in the past for the betterment of cricket in USA “,they added.
