ICC bans Yasir Shah till March 27 over anti-doping code violation
ISLAMABAD, Feb 7 (APP): The International Cricket Council (ICC) Sunday banned Pakistani leg-spinner Yasir Shah from playing all types of cricket for a tenure of three months, accepting cricketer's stance in anti-doping code violation case. Following the announcement, Yasir Shah, who was banned from playing cricket on December 27, 2015; will be able to play cricket from March 28, 2016, a private news channel reported on Sunday.

Irfan, Bacha to face Nouman, Taimur in Men Badminton doubles final
PESHAWAR, Feb 6 (APP): Irfan and Bacha Khan of Tarnab village will face Nouman and Taimur Khan of Palosia village in the final of the Peshawar District Inter-Club Men Badminton Championship played here at local Hujra at Landi Arbab, a suburban village of Peshawar, on Saturday. In the first semi-final Nouman and Taimur Khan defeated Sajid and Sana Ullah of Tehkal Payan by 3-1, the score was 21-18, 21-19, 21-16 and 21-19 while in the second semi-final Irfan and Bach outclassed Tahir and Arif of Landi Arbab village by 3-0, the score was 21-19, 21-15 and 21-19.

Profile of caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting

memonISLAMABAD, Nov 16 (APP): Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Senator Nisar A. Memon who took oath of office on Friday has also served as Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Management Services, Culture, State and Frontier Regions in the caretaker government of then Prime Minister Moeen Qureshi in 1993.He has also served as Minister for Information with President Gen. Pervez Musharraf from March-November 2002.

Nisar Memon has a vast experience of management of both public and private sector.

He is the Chairman, Standing Committee of Senate for Defence and Defence Production and member of the Standing Committees of Senate for Foreign Affairs, Finance and Economic Affairs.

He served as the Chairman, Parliamentary Committee on Water and Resources in 2003 and 2004.

He is member Board of Pakistan Council for Research Water Resources and Member Board of Governor National University FAST.

Nisar A Memon completed his M.Sc from the University of Karachi and B.Sc from D.J. Government College, Karachi.

He has attended courses in international Affairs at the Pakistan Institute of International affairs, Karachi, IBM International Management School, La Huipe, Belgium and is a winner of the European Exceptional Achievement Award, Paris.

He served as lecturer in the Adamjee Science College before joining IBM in December 1968.

The Minister for Information held various management positions at IBM, including international assignment to its European Headquarters, Paris and in Kuwait.

He served as the IBM’s Country general manager for Pakistan from 1989-1999 and took early retirement from IBM to work for economic reforms in the country.

Nisar Memon is the Foundation President of the Reformers Pakistan that was established in 1999. He has served as Vice Chairman, National Fund for Cultural Heritage, Islamabad; Director, American Life Insurance Company, Karachi; President, Overseas Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Karachi; President, American Business Council, Karachi; President, Pakistan Society for Training and development, Karachi; Member, Pakistan Engineering Board, Islamabad; Member, Syndicate University of Karachi; Member, Selection Board, University of Sindh, Jamshoro; and, Member, Advisory Board and Citizen Police Liaison Committee, Karachi.

Following is the profile of Dr. Salman Shah.

Dr. Salman Shah also served as Advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance, Economic Affairs, Revenues and Statistics in the former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz’s Cabinet from September 5, 2004 to November 15, 2007.

He has had the privilege of heading the Ministry of Finance at a time of great economic reforms and rapid growth of the economy.

This period has been marked by Pakistan’s entry into the long term capital markets of the world and the placement of Pakistan on the radar screens of leading Global investment houses.

For the first time Pakistan has broken through all previous records of foreign investment and set economic performance benchmarks that will be difficult to beat.

Dr. Salman Shah brings with him a blend of academia, public sector and the private sector.

He has to his credit 16 years of teaching activities at various universities including Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Faculty of Management at University of Toronto, University of Michigan Business School and Indiana University Business School.’

He has vast experience of working with national/international organizations, Government ministries and departments and corporate sector in various capacities including Chairman Privatization Commission, Adviser SMEDA at its inception, Adviser on Public Finance for the Government of the Punjab.

He has widely consulted with the banking and the corporate sector in Pakistan.

Dr. Salman Shah has been on the Board of Governors of State Bank of Pakistan, PIA, Foundation University and the Bank of Punjab.

He has deep understanding of the Pakistan economy gained through extensive interaction with International financial Institutions and governmental organizations on varied strategic assignments in Pakistan dealing with Public Policy, Financial Sector, Energy Sector, Industrial Sector, Agricultural and Fisheries sector, Trade and Commerce issues, Transport Sector and Banking Industry.

He was a Member of the Commission on Transformation of the Economy.

Dr. Shah holds a Ph. D. in Finance from Kelley School of Business Administration, Indiana University, Bloomington, Specializing in Finance, Banking and Information Economics.

He has published papers in Journals of international repute including the Journal of Economic Theory, USA and Journal of Finance, USA.

Born at Lahore in October, 1950. He is married with five children.

He also contributed in various sectors as Director-National Fibres Limited, Director-Pakistan Industries Credit and Investment Corporation Limited, Member, Board of Governors, Aitchison College, Lahore, Member, Board of Governors, Postgraduate Medical Institute/Services Hospital, Lahore and Director, Trust for Voluntary Organization, Ministry of Economic Affairs.

interISLAMABAD, Nov 21 (APP): Lt. Gen. ® Hamid Nawaz Khan, who has sworn in as caretaker Interior Minister and Narcotics Control enjoyed high-profile standing in strategic fields in the defence-related institutions.

He held a distinguished position as Chief of Staff in a Corps Headquarters and Instructor in Command and Staff College, Quetta as well as National Defence University, Islamabad.

Khan did his graduation in commerce with honours from Punjab University and M.Sc (War Studies) from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad.

During his 34-year service in Pakistan Army, the caretaker interior minister has also been conferred Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military).

He commanded an Infantry Division at Quetta for three years and retired in year 2000 from General Headquarters where his last appointment was Vice Chief of the General Staff.

Thereafter, he served in the Ministry of Defence as Secretary Defence for four years from 2001 to 2005.

He also served as ex-officio Chairman of Pakistan International Airlines and its subsidiary organization PIA Investments, Chairman Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman Fauji Foundation.

As Secretary Defence, he led a delegation to India in August 2004 for dialogue on Siachin issue and held frequent defence consultative group meetings and strategic dialogues with various countries; particularly the United States, UK and Turkey.

He achieved a major breakthrough in his career particularly in the post 9/11 scenario for the upgradation of the weapon system and the acquisition programmes and developing strategic understanding with the NATO countries.

deffISLAMABAD, Nov 21 (APP): The Caretaker Defence Minister Syed Salim Abbas Jilani retired from public service in 1996 after a long unblemished career and took over as caretaker Minister for Defence on November 16.

His last post with the federal government was secretary defence, which he held for seven years ending in 1996.

He has the singular distinction of holding the most coveted jobs in Pakistan viz/, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, Chairman Pakistan International Airlines, Chairman Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman Fauji Foundation, Chairman Pakistan Steel, Chairman Karachi Electric Supply Corporation, Chairman Rice Export Corporation and Secretary Health and Education in NWFP and Secretary Home Department Sindh. He remained Chief secretary of Balochistan and Sindh provinces.

Because of his success in these key positions and his family background, Jilani is well known and widely respected by political, business, agricultural, military and bureaucratic leaders and cadres all over the country.

A Masters in Public Administration from the J.F.K. School of Government, Harvard University, USA, Mr Jilani joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1957.

He did Masters in Political Science from the Punjab University, Lahore in first division, with Roll of Honors besides Diploma in Pubic Management, Cambridge University, UK, Diploma in Business Management, Boston Institute of Business Management USA.

Salim Abbas Jilani hails from Muzaffargarh district Punjab.

Presently, Salim Abbas Jilani is Chairman, Pak-Arab Refinery Ltd. (PARCO) with headquarters in Karachi. He is also chairman HOPE, a philanthropic NGO dedicated to help poor/deserving students and patients.



Federal Minister for MINFAL Prince Muhammad Isa Jan’s a high profile farmer

isa-janISLAMABAD, Nov 22 (APP): A high profile member of farming community with rich agricultural background from Balochistan, Prince Muhammad Isa Jan has been inducted as Federal Minister for Food Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL) in the Caretaker Cabinet of Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro.

Equipped with modern technical knowhow in the Agriculture sector, he headed National Tribal Construction Company (NTC),”a no limit civil construction company” operating for the last 38 years .

He is the son of His Highness Sir Mir Ahmed Yar Khan the “Khan of Kalat” and was born in October 4, 1945 in Kalat (Balochistan) and graduated in Economics from University of the Punjab (Gordon College Rawalpindi) in 1967.

Prince Muhammad Isa remained president Balochistan Contractors Association for 12 years and is member of Civil Construction Committee SAARC Secretariat Islamabad.

Prince Muhammad Isa was also the Director Associated Hotels of Pakistan for 13 years, member of Balochistan Zakat Council and member Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) for 3 years. 

He is verstile in languages including English, Urdu, Balochi, Brohi, Punjabi, Sindi, Pashto, Persian and Arabic.

Profile of education minister Dr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha

eduISLAMABAD, Nov 23 (APP): Educated at the South Bank and Westminster, Universities in the U.K., and the University of Minnesota. U.S.A. Dr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha’s professional career has spanned over industrial development and higher education.

For 16 years he headed Venture Capital Industrial tourism promotion initiatives of the Aga Khan Foundation for Economic Development. Thereafter nearly three decades, first as head of the planning and building team and later as Founding President and Trustee of AKU, he led the University in Pakistan, East Africa, Afghanistan, Egypt, Syria and the U.K.

Under his leadership the University attained international recognition for the quality of its academic and service programmes in Medicine, Nursing and Education.

Dr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha has served on the boards of several government, professional and research organizations, including Pakistan Medical Research Council and on numerous governmental bodies and advisory panels in the areas of government committee that developed and wrote the Environment Protection Act of the University of Central Asia in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

He was appointed Co-chair of the Task force for the Improvement of Higher Education in Pakistan by the Government of Pakistan and subsequently served as Chairman of the Steering committee on Higher Education, with the status of a Minister of State. 

The President has also appointed him on the high level National Commission for Government Reforms and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

He is recognized for his pioneering leadership roles in voluntary community service and for enhancing Philanthropy. He is the founding Chair of the Board of Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy and a Board Member of the Pakistan Human Development fund of the government.

With this wide ranging involvement Dr. Kassim-Lakha has pioneered the building of world class institutions in Pakistan that have acted as successful bridges for the transfer of technical know-how, talent, and capital between the industrialized world and the developing countries.

In recognition of his services to higher education, health care and public service, he has received the degree of doctor of Laws, honoris causa from McMaster university of Canada (1984); the Sitara-i-Imtiaz from the president of Pakistan (1999); the award of Officer in the French National Order of Merit from President Jacques Chirac of France (2001); and the award of Hilal-i-Imtiaz from the President of Pakistan (2002).

USA and HG Asia, Hong Kong.

Since then he has been actively involved in establishing other companies in the financial services sector as well as the telecommunications, media, insurance and real estate/property development sectors in Pakistan.

Taseer has vast experience of specialization in merger and acquisitions, floatation, investment banking and stock market analysis and also delivered presentations on various financial issues.

He has also been an author of a number of articles on Investment and Financial subjects.

He has participated in numerous telecommunication conferences and seminars within and outside Pakistan.

He is currently also serving as a member of the Board of Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and on the Board of Directors of USF (Universal Service Fund) Company Limited.

ISLAMABAD, Nov 25 (APP): Ejaz Rahim has been appointed as Minister for Health in the caretaker setup of the Prime Minister Mohammedmian Soomro.

Following is the profile of the Caretaker Minister:

Ejaz Rahim is highly qualified and experienced bureaucrat. He did his M.A. in Development Studies (Specialization in Agriculture and Rural Development), Institute of Social studies, The Hague, Netherlands ( 1979-1981).

He did M.A. in English Literature from Government College, Lahore, in 1966 and M.A in Political Science from Punjab University in 1968.

He is a Senior Cambridge from Burn Hall School, Abbottabad (NWFP) in 1959. During his career he did Senior Management Course from Administrative Staff College Lahore in 1991. He got Diploma in HRD from University of Pittsburg, USA in 1990 and Management Course from National Institute of Public Administration Karachi.

He also got Diploma in rural Development from UN Asian Development Institute, Bangkok, Thailand in 1978.

During his career he served on various important posts. He is a Member of National Commission on Government Reforms headed by Dr.  Ishrat Hussain. He is also a Member of the Regional Consultative Committee of WHO/EMRO.

He was appointed Member (Social Sectors) Planning Commission of Pakistan. He served as Cabinet Secretary, Government of Pakistan from 2004 to 2006. He also served as Federal Secretary, Ministry of Health from 2000 to 2004.

He was appointed as Secretary, Ministry of Population Welfare in 2000. He served as Managing Director, Pakistan Television Corporation from 1996 to 1997.

He remained Chief Secretary, NWFP from 1994 to 1996. He served as Commissioner of Peshawar Division and Hazara Division from 1986 to 1990.

He served as Director General, Rural Development and LG (NWFP) from 1978 to 1979. Incharge of German-assisted development programme.

He also served as Director General, special Development Unit, Poppy Eradication projects in NWFP/FATA from 1984 to 1985. He remained Provincial Secretary in NWFP in Finance, Education, and Planning and Development Department from 1981 to 1985.

He worked as Deputy Commissioner/DM in Bannu, Mardan, Peshawar and Frontier Regions (FRS) and also Political Agent of Malakand Agency from 1973 to 1978 and Assistant Commissioner Mansehra in 1970.

He represented Pakistan on various important international fora. He represented EMRO on the Board of GFTAM and Global Stop-TB Coordinating Board from 2000 to 2004.

He also represented in Loan Negotiations on Development Loans with World Bank and ADB besides international and regional conferences, workshops and seminars on development issues.

He remained Proposal Manager of 7th Round of Global Fund Projects from Pakistan for HIV-AIDS, TB and Malaria (2007) and  Member of EMRO/WHO Advisory Committee on Health Policy (2007).
