ISLAMABAD, Jun 1 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday congratulated Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and the government on presenting the fifth successive budget. The President said budget was an important milestone as it was another step of the PPP government to create more economic growth, provide more job opportunities and raise living standard of the people. The President said the democratic government presented a growth oriented budget despite serious constraints caused by militancy, floods and international financial crises.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 1 (APP): Federal Minister for Finance Friday said that Pakistan has experienced phenomenal performance in exports in the last two years. Presenting the National Budget for the year 2012-13 in the National Assembly, Shaikh said that last year, exports increased by 28%, crossing the $25 billion mark. This year, he added, in spite of global downturn, the country would be able to maintain this high level of exports.
He said the imports are likely to rise 15% this year, primarily due to higher oil prices.

ISLAMABAD, June 1 (APP): Minister for Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh Friday laid before the Senate a copy of the Finance Bill 2012, containing the annual budget statement. Amidst insistence by the opposition members for a point of order, the minister moved the motion to the Upper House seeking its recommendations, if any, to the National Assembly on the Finance Bill. Laying the annual budget statement before the Senate is a constitutional requirement although the budget is passed by the National Assembly, which incorporates certain recommendations made by the Upper House.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 1 (APP): Minister for Finance Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh said on Friday that to avoid multiplicity of rates and decrease the burden on the consumers, all GST rates above 16% were being brought down to 16%. During his budget speech in the National Assembly, he said that the incumbent government had reformed the general sales tax system last year, by eliminating zero rating; reduction of the multiplicity of rates and expanding coverage to all sectors except food, health and education. “This process of reform must continue”, he said.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 1 (APP): The Federal Minister for Finance, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh said Friday that remittances have increased from $9 billion in 2009-10 to over $13 billion this year, showing an increase of 45% in two years. In his budget speech, the minister said the government has taken several initiatives which helped outstanding performance of foreign remittances.
