30 percent babies have low birth weight: Survey PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, Jun 4 (APP): Around 30 percent babies have low birth weight reflecting the poor nutritional status of mothers in the country, said National Nutrition Survey (NNS) 2011. The national food availability estimated through food balance sheets has been satisfactory for the major food items during the fiscal year 2011-12. It is further stated in NNS that approximately 32 percent children under the age of five years and 15 percent mothers are underweight.
 
Livestock contributes 11.6 % to GDP PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, Jun 4 (APP): Livestock sector has contributed approximately 55.1 per cent to the agriculture value added and 11.6 per cent to national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during the 2010-12 against 54.6 per cent during the same period last year. According to the Economic Survey report 2011-12, the livestock sector occupies a unique position in the National Agenda of economic development of the present government.

ISLAMABAD, May 31 (APP): Sugarcane production for the year 2011-12 is estimated at 58.0 million tons, in contrast to last year’s production of 55.3 million tons, reveal Economic Survey launched here on Thursday. According to the Survey 2011-12 an increase of 4.9 percent over the production of last year’s produce and timely availability of inputs encouraged the farmers to grow more sugarcane crop. However the yield per hectare if compared with the last year, posted negative growth.

ISLAMABAD, May 31 (APP): Minister for Finance Dr Hafeez Sheikh on Thursday said that the government has extended special incentives for mineral development through public and private investment and facilitating private sector to contribute in this sector. Launching an Economic Survey 2011-12 here at a press conference, he said that to revive industrial growth, a 100 MW power plant was established by using Thar coal deposits based on underground coal gasification, which would convert into 1000 MW power plant and efforts are made for exploration and evaluation of coalfields in Sindh and Balochistan.
 
Broad Money witnesses downward trend in 2011-12 PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, May 31 (APP): Broad Money and close substitutes for money, witnessed an expansion of 9.09 per cent as compared to 11.47 percent during the same period in 2010-11, according to Economic Survey of Pakistan 2011-12. The deceleration in the money supply is primarily driven by the  significant fall in the Net Foreign Assets (NFA) of the banking system, along  with increased government borrowing and a one-off settlement of circular debt. During the first half of the fiscal year 2011-12, a significant decline  in capital financial accounts inflows resulted in the depletion of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) foreign exchange reserves to finance the major part of current deficit.
