ISLAMABAD, Jun 2 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said the prices of petroleum products have been reduced to provide relief to the common man.This decision has taken in the wake of decrease in the petroleum prices in international market, he added.The Prime Minister expressed these views while talking to Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr. Asim Hussain, who called on him at Prime Minister House on Thursday afternoon.The Prime Ministry directed the Minister to devise a system for accelerated production of oil and gas from indigenous sources.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 2 (APP): The number of polio cases have reduced from thousands to just 140 cases in 2010 and polio remained in just a few strongholds across the country.According to the Economic Survey 2010-11 launched here Thursday, Pakistan has made tremendous progress towards achieving polio targets and global experts have re-affirmed that country could be the next polio free country in the world. Similarly, mass vaccination campaign in 40 high risk districts has been completed during September-October 2010 whereas second phase in 30 districts is underway.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 2 (APP): Pakistan’s per capita income in dollar term has risen to $ 1254 in 2010-11 from $ 1073, showing tremendous increase of 16.9 percent. According to the Economic Survey launched by the Ministry of Finance here on Thursday, the increase is mainly because of stable exchange rate as well as higher growth in normal GNP. Real private consumption rose by 7.0 per cent as against 4.0 per cent attains last year. However, gross fixed capital formation lost its strong growth momentum and real fixed investment growth contracted by 0.4 per cents against the contraction of 6.1 percent in last fiscal year.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 2 (APP) - The overall literacy rate for age 10 years and above is 57.7 percent, 69.5 percent for male and 45.2 percent for female, the Economic Survey 2002-11 launched here Thursday said.It said during 2008-09 literacy rate was the 57.4 percent, 69.3 percent for male and 44.7 percent for female. The survey’s data shows that literacy remains higher in urban areas (73.2 percent) than in rural areas (49.2 percent), and is more prevalent for men (80.2 percent) compared to women (65.5 percent) in rural areas. However, it is evident from the data that rural-urban and male-female disparity seems to be closing a bit.
