Age no barrier for Pakistani players in 12th South Asian Games
ISLAMABAD, Feb 10 (APP): Age is just a number for the Pakistani table tennis team for the 12th South Asian Games which is taking place from 5 February to 16 February 2016 in Guwahati and Shillong, India. They have the 45 plus duo of Shabnam Bilal and Raheela Khalif, who helped the women's team win the silver, 12 years after they had claimed the same feat at the Games' 2004 edition in Islamabad.

 
England to face Pakistan in 5th place playoff in U19 CWC
KARACHI, Feb 10 (APP): England demolished Namibia by 203 runs on Wednesday to set up a clash with Pakistan for the fifth/sixth position playoff in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2016. England, which lost to Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals, piled up 286 for nine after being sent in to bat in a match reduced to 48 overs a side due to murky weather in Fatullah.

Rookie Nawaz, Rumman in Pak team for Asia Cup & World T20, Shahzad, Gul axed
KARACHI, Feb 10 (APP): National selectors Monday named rookie all-rounder Muhammad Nawaz and southpaw paceman Rumman Raees in their 15-member squad for the upcoming ACC T20 Asia Cup and ICC World T20. Opener Khurram Manzoor was also recalled in the national squad with Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed. No specialist spinner included in the team.

 
Pakistan Judo team to depart for 12th South Asian Games on Thursday morning
PESHAWAR, Feb 10 (APP): The 15-member Pakistan Judo Federation would depart for India to participate in the ongoing 12th South Asian Games’s judo event on Thursday morning. Talking to APP, Secretary General Pakistan Judo Federation, Masood Ahmad said the Pakistan Judo Team consisting of 4 officials, 1 Technical Official, 6 male and 6 Female Judokas.

US expands fight against IS with attacks in Afghanistan: Report PDF Print E-mail
NEW YORK, Feb. 1 (APP):  The United States has stepped up military operations in the past three weeks against militants in Afghanistan aligned with the Islamic State (IS), expanding the Obama administration's military campaign against the terrorist group beyond Iraq and Syria, a leading American newspaper reported Monday. The operations, including commando raids and airstrikes, followed  President Barack Obama's decision last month to broaden the authority of American commanders to attack the Islamic State's new branch in Afghanistan, according to The New York Times. The administration, which has been accused by Republicans of not having a strategy to defeat the group, is revamping plans for how it fights the terrorist group in regions where it has developed affiliates.

Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry travelled to San Francisco this  week where he attended a preparatory conference that discussed procedural matters relating to the summit, which will be attended by the heads of government and states of 35
to 45 countries. Pakistan's Ambassador to the US, Jalil Abbas Jilani also attended the preparatory meeting.

 
UN chief urges support for Ethiopia's efforts to battle worst drought in 30 years PDF Print E-mail
UNITED NATIONS, Jan 31 (APP):  The international community must stand with the people of Ethiopia in their time of need, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Sunday, urging donors gathered in Addis Ababa to step up assistance to the drought-hit country, which is battling the effects of one of the most powerful El Nino events in recorded history, made worse by the impact of climate change. "The people of this beautiful country are facing their worst drought in thirty years," the secretary-general told participants at a donors humanitarian round table convened in the Ethiopian capital on the margins of the 26th African Union Summit. Later on Sunday, the Secretary-General is expected to visit drought-stricken areas of the country.

The editorial board's endorsements , published online and to run in Sunday's print edition, represent a potential boost for the two candidates two days before the Iowa caucuses on Monday.

In a written reply to questions by the Senate Armed Services Committee  which is considering his nomination, Gen Nicholson stated the military operation being carried out by the Pakistani military in the tribal region had reduced the ability of militants to use Pakistani territory as a safe haven for terrorism.
