Pakistan wants UN Security Council’s expansion to be ‘within a reasonable limit’, not made bloated PDF Print E-mail
UNITED NATIONS, April 12 (APP): While reaffirming it’s opposition to adding new individual permanent members in the Security Council, Pakistan has proposed that the 15-member body’s  expansion should be “within a reasonable limit” to ensure that it functions efficiently and effectively. “We want a smart, not a bloated, Council,” Ambassador Masood Khan, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the U.N. when the stalled intergovernmental negotiations (IGN) on restructuring the Security Council resumed on Friday. “Each new seat will need to be justified,” he said, addinng, “The main rationale for increasing the size of the Council is to ensure equitable representation by addressing the regional imbalance and under-representation that exists in the Council’s current composition, proportionate to the total UN membership.”

WASHINGTON, April 12 (APP): Finance Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar has invited American entrepreneurs to avail tremendous investment opportunities that Pakistan’s large market offers amid improving economy. “The potential for expansion in Pakistan-US trade and investment is much bigger than even the current strong levels,” he said. Speaking to members of Pakistan-US Business Council, which included representatives from energy companies and many other sectors, Dar renewed Islamabad’s commitment to facilitate foreign investors in doing business in a host of promising areas. Citing robust international interest in Pakistan’s recent reentry into the bonds market, and a recent assessment by Japan External Trade Organization, which rates Pakistan as the second best place of choice for investment, the finance minister said foreign investment in Pakistan enjoyed full legal protection, and the cost of human resource in production was also very lucrative.

UNITED NATIONS, April 12 (APP): Pakistan told a U.N. panel of the progress it has achieved in reducing child, infant and maternal mortality, and said efforts were being made to align population trend with economic growth potential through better coordination between federation and provinces. “Today Pakistan can proudly claim that it has halved the maternal mortality rate, doubled the proportion of births by skilled attendants, tripled the contraceptive usage, and quadrupled the antenatal consultations since 1990/91,”  Zakia Shahnawaz, Pakistan’s chief delegate to 47th Session of Commission on Population and Development, said on Friday.

WASHINGTON, April 11 (APP): Finance Minister Muhamamd Ishaq Dar has said Islamabad is fully focused on addressing the energy challenges facing the country and will facilitate investment into the key sector. He was speaking at a discussion hosted by the Business Council of International Understanding that includes members from more than 150 world-leading companies and is dedicated to promoting dialogue and action between the business and government communities. Senator Dar said since its inception, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif-led government in Islamabad has taken the lingering issue of energy shortages head on, and is working to overcome energy shortfall through a focused approach.

WASHINGTON, April 11 (APP): Finance Minister, Muhammad Ishaq Dar met with Philippe Le Houerou, Vice President SAR, World Bank, who assured him of the Bank’s cooperation in realizing Pakistan’s economic and energy priorities. Mr Houerou began by appreciating the Pakistan Government’s efforts in putting economy back on track. He praised the resolve of the government towards solving the economic issues faced by the country and appreciated deft handling of tough issues.
