Cricket: Rain delays Pakistan’s clash with Scotland
EDINBURGH, May 19, (APP/AFP) - Pakistan’s one-day international against Scotland was delayed on Sunday due to a waterlogged playing surface in Edinburgh. The umpires ordered a 1200GMT pitch inspection at the Grange after taking a close look at the wicket three times before the scheduled start of play. Heavy rain in the Scottish capital on Saturday left areas of the outfield sodden, while there were also worries about the condition of the wicket.

Army wins national women cycling title
LAHORE, May 18 (APP): Pakistan Army won the title of the 10th  national women cycling championship here on Saturday at the cycling velodrome. Army’s riders added another gold to their previous four to emerge the winners of the three-day premier event held under the supervision of Pakistan Cycling Federation,Munawar Baseer Group.

Recent spot-fixing scandal has tarnished cricket’s image further: ex-players
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Former Pakistan cricketers feel that the recent spot-fixing scandal that has rocked ongoing Indian Premier has tarnished the image of the game of cricket. Erstwhile skipper Zaheer Abbas in an interview on Friday said that he was shocked by the scandal involving Indian Test player,  Sreesanth and two others—Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. “What worries me is that this apparently is just the tip of the iceberg as far as corruption in cricket is concerned. There have always been fears that the IPL was a soft target for bookmakers but no one took this seriously,” he said.

Army wins 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo C’ship
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Pakistan Army won the 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo Championship by clinching overall 17 gold, three silver and two bronze medals on Friday here at Liaquat Gymnasium. Army secured a total of 507 points. WAPDA remained second with 165 points, securing one gold, six silver and two bronze medals.

National athletics championship dedicated to Zakir Syed
LAHORE, May 17 (APP): Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) has decided to dedicate the 45th edition of the National Athletics Championship in the memory of late Syed Zakir Hussain Syed, a former director general of Pakistan Sports Board. The premier activity, both for men and women, will be organised May 24 at Jinnah stadium Islamabad and all the affiliated units of the AFP will take part, said a spokesman of AFP here on Friday. He said late Zakir rendered meritorious services for the cause of sports in the country and the AFP has decided to dedicate the championship to him to acknowledge his valuable contributions as a sports administrative. “Over 500 athletes belonging to the four provinces, AJ&K, FATA, Gilgit Baltistan and various services and departments will compete in the three-day sports “, he added.

Over seven typhoons may hit China in 2013 PDF Print E-mail
BEIJING, May 12 (APP):  The number of typhoons that will land along China’s coastal areas this year is estimated to be between seven and nine, the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center said on Sunday. Though the figures are similar to that of last year, typhoons are becoming more destructive due to climate change, according to Zhang Zhihua, an official with the center. The possibility of an increase in violent typhoons can not be ruled out, Xinhua news repported. “The typhoons coming this year are expected to have a bigger impact on coastal provinces like Zhejiang and Fujian which lie  along the East China Sea,” said Li Benxia, another official with the center.

Security Council as it reviewed the work of its three anti-terrorism Committees.

Top UN official urges world community not to become ‘numb’ to atrocities in Syria PDF Print E-mail
UNITED NATIONS, May 10 (APP): The international community must act to stop the conflict in Syria and ensure those responsible for human rights violations are held accountable, the UN  human rights chief said Friday, following reports of massacres in Baniyas. “We should not reach the point in this conflict where people become numb to the atrocious killing of civilians,” said the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay.
