Cricket: Rain delays Pakistan’s clash with Scotland
EDINBURGH, May 19, (APP/AFP) - Pakistan’s one-day international against Scotland was delayed on Sunday due to a waterlogged playing surface in Edinburgh. The umpires ordered a 1200GMT pitch inspection at the Grange after taking a close look at the wicket three times before the scheduled start of play. Heavy rain in the Scottish capital on Saturday left areas of the outfield sodden, while there were also worries about the condition of the wicket.

Army wins national women cycling title
LAHORE, May 18 (APP): Pakistan Army won the title of the 10th  national women cycling championship here on Saturday at the cycling velodrome. Army’s riders added another gold to their previous four to emerge the winners of the three-day premier event held under the supervision of Pakistan Cycling Federation,Munawar Baseer Group.

Recent spot-fixing scandal has tarnished cricket’s image further: ex-players
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Former Pakistan cricketers feel that the recent spot-fixing scandal that has rocked ongoing Indian Premier has tarnished the image of the game of cricket. Erstwhile skipper Zaheer Abbas in an interview on Friday said that he was shocked by the scandal involving Indian Test player,  Sreesanth and two others—Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. “What worries me is that this apparently is just the tip of the iceberg as far as corruption in cricket is concerned. There have always been fears that the IPL was a soft target for bookmakers but no one took this seriously,” he said.

Army wins 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo C’ship
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Pakistan Army won the 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo Championship by clinching overall 17 gold, three silver and two bronze medals on Friday here at Liaquat Gymnasium. Army secured a total of 507 points. WAPDA remained second with 165 points, securing one gold, six silver and two bronze medals.

National athletics championship dedicated to Zakir Syed
LAHORE, May 17 (APP): Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) has decided to dedicate the 45th edition of the National Athletics Championship in the memory of late Syed Zakir Hussain Syed, a former director general of Pakistan Sports Board. The premier activity, both for men and women, will be organised May 24 at Jinnah stadium Islamabad and all the affiliated units of the AFP will take part, said a spokesman of AFP here on Friday. He said late Zakir rendered meritorious services for the cause of sports in the country and the AFP has decided to dedicate the championship to him to acknowledge his valuable contributions as a sports administrative. “Over 500 athletes belonging to the four provinces, AJ&K, FATA, Gilgit Baltistan and various services and departments will compete in the three-day sports “, he added.

Pakistan embassy in Washington marks Independence Day PDF Print E-mail
WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (APP): The Pakistani embassy here marked the 66th Independence Day of the country with a flag-hoisting ceremony, as members of the diaspora also joined the diplomats and officials in celebrating the occasion.Ambassador Sherry Rehman hoisted the flag while the national anthem was played in a ceremony held in the embassy compound.The ambassador read out messages of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf , in which the two leaders urged the nation to work collectively to achieve the ideals of democracy and egalitarian progress of the country, espoused by founding fathers led by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.Ambassador Rehman congratulated the gathering on the auspicious occasion.The proceedings started with recitation of the Holy Qur’an and concluded with prayers for solidarity, development and security of Pakistan and its citizens.Families of Pakistani diplomats and staff including children, many of them attired in green and white color of the national flag, also attended the event.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (APP): The 66th Independence Day of Pakistan was celebrated with solemnity and fervour by Pakistanis in Thailand.The traditional flag-hoisting ceremony was held at the Pakistan Embassy in Bangkok, attended by members of the Mission as well as Pakistani community.Messages of the President and Prime Minister were read on the occasion, according to a message received from Bangkok here on Tuesday.Pakistan’s Ambassador to Thailand Sohail Mahmood, in his remarks, recounted the blessings that freedom brings and underscored the imperative of remembering the sacrifices rendered by the founding fathers in winning this freedom.He stressed that Quaid-e-Azam’s principles of unity, faith and discipline were indispensable in the nation’s quest to build a progressive, democratic, modern, Islamic Pakistan as envisioned by the Quaid.Ambassador Sohail Mahmood also appreciated the role of expatriate Pakistanis in supporting Pakistan at all times of need and their contribution to Pakistan ‘s socio-economic development.

He read out messages of the President and the Prime Minister on the occasion.President Asif Ali Zardari in his message stated that the founding fathers envisioned Pakistan as a country where democracy, constitutionalism and rule of law would reign supreme.“Let us on this day rededicate ourselves to the democratic ideals and principles of our Qaid Mr. Muhammad Ali Jinnah.” “On this day, I wish to call upon everyone to work together for the strengthening of democracy, empowerment of the people and for a progressive, tolerant, moderate and modern Pakistan as envisioned by our great leaders,” he added.The message of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Raja Pervez Ashraf highlighted that the present government has taken various historic initiatives during the last four and half years and pursued a policy of reconciliation.
 
National flag hoisted at Pakistan House in New York to mark Independence day PDF Print E-mail
NEW YORK, Aug 14 (APP):  The national flag was hoisted at the Pakistan house in New York Tuesday to mark the 66th anniversary of the country’s establishment as an independent, sovereign nation.As the national anthem was played, Pakistan’s Consul General Faqir Asif Hussain and the acting Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, Sahebzada Ahmed Khan, raised the flag to the mast before a gathering of officers and staff of the Pakistan Mission to the UN and the Consulate General in New York.The proceedings began with recitation from the Holy Quran. Consul General Asif Hussain read out Independence Day messages of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.In a speech, the Consul General paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah for his sterling leadership, saying Pakistan was created to ensure religious freedom, social and economic quality for all its citizens irrespective of their creed, sex, sect or religion.Asif Hussain called for renewing the pledge to work for those ideals and
to come up to the Quaid’s expectations.
 
Tajikistan to import wheat, rice, corn from Pakistan PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (APP): Tajikistan will import about 100,000 ton wheat, 5000 ton rice, 5000 ton corn, banola oil and fertilizers to fulfill its domestic requirements.A high level delegation led by Nurmahmad Akhmedov, Chairman of the Agency on State Material Reserves called on Commerce Minister, Makhdoom Amin Fahim here Tuesday.Both sides appreciated the excellent political, diplomatic relations and assured that they will continue to work together to enhance bilateral trade and economic relations, said a statement.The government and the people of Tajikistan are under stress for provision of basic food materials due to unprecedented heavy snowfalls in autumn and winter last year.The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of Cabinet Division has already approved export of 30,000 ton of sugar to Tajikistan at a price difference of  US $ 20 per ton from international price through Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).It was decided that Ministry of Commerce will arrange meeting of the Tajik delegation with exporters for forging business contracts.
