35th CAS Open Golf Championship from February 11-14
KARACHI, Feb 8 (APP): 35th Chief of The Air Staff (CAS) Open Golf Championship will be held here from February 11 to 14 at Airmen Golf Course PAF Base, Korangi Creek. More than 300 professional and amateur golfers from all over Pakistan are playing for Rs 3.2 million prize championship, it was official announced here Monday.

 
PCB seeks more time in announcing T20 squads
ISLAMABAD, Feb 8 (APP): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday sought a couple of days time from the International Cricket Council (ICC) in announcing squads for the Twenty-20 World Cup and Asia Cup. The T20 World Cup will be held in India from March 8 to April 3 while the Asia Cup will be staged in Bangladesh from February 24 to March 6. Feb. 8 was supposed to be the deadline for World Cup-bound squad.

 
WI stun Pak to storms in ICC World U19 CWC despite Umairs' ton
KARACHI, Feb 8 (APP): Umair Masood smashed a fighting century but his grand effort went in van as West Indies stunned Pakistan by five wickets to storm into the semi-final of ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Fataullah (Bangladesh) on Monday. Batting first, Pakistan posted 226 for the loss of six wickets in their 50 overs.West Indies in reply romped home for the loss of five wickets with 10 overs to spare.

 
Indo-Pak Friendship Cup Snooker series would be revived: Alamgir
KARACHI, Feb 8 (APP): The popular Indo-Pak Peace Cup Snooker series would be revived, President Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) Alamgir Shaikh said here on Monday. "We are working on plan to resume the series after lapse of six years," he told reporters during the launch of 41st National Snooker Championship at Karachi Gymkhana.

ISLAMABAD, Feb 7 (APP): Lianna Swan won another medal for Pakistan in swimming in the South Asian Games at India. Lianna won a silver medal in 100m Breaststroke, says a press release issued here.

BEIJING, May 31 (APP): The Bank of China (BOC), China’s third-largest lender, announced Thursday that it has been approved as one of the country’s first market makers in yuan-yen direct trading, which is set to start Friday.The BOC said in a statement that it will comply with its duties, quote both the buy and sell prices of the yuan against the Japanese currency on the interbank foreign exchange market and provide liquidity for the market.The BOC’s announcement came after HSBC Bank (China) Co., Ltd. said Wednesday that it was approved as a market maker in yuan-yen direct trading on China’s interbank market, reports Xinhua news. Mizuho Corporate Bank (China) Ltd., a subsidiary of the Japan-based Mizuho Corporate Bank, has also been granted the status, the Shanghai -based China Business News reported Thursday.
 
17 projects underway to generate 20,000 MW electricity PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, May 31 (APP):  Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA)is implementing on priority a least-cost energy generation plan to help reduce electricity shortfall and increase the ratio of low-cost hydel electricity in the national grid. Under the plan, 17 large projects are under construction or at detailed engineering stage, which  would generate more than 20,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity and store about 12 million acre feet (MAF) of water. WAPDA Chairman Shakil Durrani expressed these views while presiding over a progress review meeting at WAPDA House, said a press release here Thursday.While emphasizing the importance of hydropower to meet the electricity needs in the country, the Chairman urged the project managers to complete these projects within stipulated time.It is pertinent to mention that the hydropower is the cheapest electricity generated through indigenous resource of water.
 
PTV, PBC, Religious Affairs Ministry sign MOU for Hajj awareness campaign PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, May 31 (APP): Pakistan Television, Radio Pakistan and the Ministry of Religious Affairs Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understand for Hajj Awareness Campaign 2012. The agreement was signed by Joint Secretary Ministry of Religious Affairs Shahzad Ahmad, Managing Director PTV Yousuf Baig Mirza and Director General Radio Pakistan Murtaza Solangi here.  Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira and Minister fro Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Shah were also present during the MOU signing ceremony.Under the MOU,PTV and Radio Pakistan will broadcast a series of programmes with the collaboration of the Ministry of Religious Affairs to create awareness amongst the intending pilgrims about the Hajj rituals. The PTV will telecast these programmes on PTV News and PTV Home while the Radio Pakistan broadcast them on Medium Wave and FM channels.
 
Gilani assures support of bureaucracy to PAC PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, May 31 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Thursday assured Chairman Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Nadeem Afzal Chan that bureaucracy will extend full cooperation to the Committee as it was a symbol of supremacy of the Parliament. The Prime Minister in the meeting here at the PM House said his government believed in an across the board accountability and the federal government would fully comply with the directions of PAC. The Chairman thanked the Prime Minister and said the public money will be subject to scrutiny by the parliament through the PAC.
 
Gilani for building momentum to carry Pak-India ties forward PDF Print E-mail
ISLAMABAD, May 31 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Thursday said his government attaches importance to its ties with India and expressed a strong desire to build momentum to carry the bilateral relations forward in a constructive manner.He was talking to Salman Bashir, Pakistan’s High Commissioner-designate to India who called on him here at the PM House prior to his departure to India to assume his new diplomatic assignment.Gilani emphasized on importance the present government attaches to Pakistan-India relations.The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh with whom he held several constructive meetings.
