Cricket: Rain delays Pakistan’s clash with Scotland
EDINBURGH, May 19, (APP/AFP) - Pakistan’s one-day international against
Scotland was delayed on Sunday due to a waterlogged playing surface in Edinburgh.
The umpires ordered a 1200GMT pitch inspection at the Grange after
taking a close look at the wicket three times before the scheduled start of play.
Heavy rain in the Scottish capital on Saturday left areas of the
outfield sodden, while there were also worries about the condition of the wicket.

Army wins national women cycling title
LAHORE, May 18 (APP): Pakistan Army won the title of the 10th
national women cycling championship here on Saturday at the cycling velodrome.
Army’s riders added another gold to their previous four to emerge the winners of the three-day premier event held under the supervision of Pakistan Cycling Federation,Munawar Baseer Group.

Recent spot-fixing scandal has tarnished cricket’s image further: ex-players
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Former Pakistan cricketers feel that the recent spot-fixing scandal that has rocked ongoing Indian Premier has tarnished the image of the game of cricket.
Erstwhile skipper Zaheer Abbas in an interview on Friday said that he was shocked by the scandal involving Indian Test player, Sreesanth and two others—Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan.
“What worries me is that this apparently is just the tip of the iceberg as far as corruption in cricket is concerned. There have always been fears that the IPL was a soft target for bookmakers but no one took this seriously,” he said.

Army wins 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo C’ship
ISLAMABAD, May 17 (APP): Pakistan Army won the 9th Korean Ambassador
National Taekwondo Championship by clinching overall 17 gold, three silver and
two bronze medals on Friday here at Liaquat Gymnasium.
Army secured a total of 507 points. WAPDA remained second with 165 points, securing one gold, six silver and two bronze medals.

National athletics championship dedicated to Zakir Syed
LAHORE, May 17 (APP): Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP)
has decided to dedicate the 45th edition of the National Athletics Championship
in the memory of late Syed Zakir Hussain Syed, a former director general of
Pakistan Sports Board.
The premier activity, both for men and women, will be organised May 24 at Jinnah stadium Islamabad and all the affiliated units of the AFP will take part, said a spokesman of AFP here on Friday.
He said late Zakir rendered meritorious services for the cause of sports in the country and the AFP has decided to dedicate the championship to him to acknowledge his valuable contributions as a sports administrative.
“Over 500 athletes belonging to the four provinces, AJ&K, FATA, Gilgit
Baltistan and various services and departments will compete in the three-day sports “, he added.

No fresh clash between Pakistan Army, Nato forces: ISPR Spokesman
RAWALPINDI, Nov 30 (APP): There was no fresh clash between Pakistani troops and NATO force on Pak-Afghan border on Wednesday, an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Spokesman said here.
He also contradicted a news report published in a US newspaper in this regard.
Water and Power Ministry directed make recovery from defaulters in 30 days
ISLAMABAD, Nov 30 (APP): The National Assembly Standing Committee on
Water and Power has directed the Ministry of Water and Power to disconnect
connection of defaulters if they failed to submit outstanding dues within 30
days.
A meeting of the Standing Committee on Water and Power was held on
Wednesday under the Chairmanship of Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, MNA to get briefing
on outstanding electricity bills of the ministries, divisions and attached
departments associated public bodies of the federal government.
The CEO’s of all power distribution companies gave a detailed briefing on
the issue. After hearing the briefing, the committee directed the Ministry of
Water and Power that list of defaulter departments should be provided to media
and 30 days may be given to defaulters for payment.

British Minister condoles with Pakistan on NATO attack, expresses solidarity
ISLAMABAD, Nov 30 (APP): British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt has condoled with Pakistan on NATO attack and expressed solidarity with the people of Pakistan.
The British Minister received High Commissioner Wajid
Shamsul Hasan, who met him to make a demarche on behalf of the
Government of Pakistan in the wake of NATO’s unprovoked air
attack inside Pakistan’s territory,killing 24 soldiers and
injuring others, said a press release received here Wednesday from London.
The High Commissioner registered Government of Pakistan’s deep concern over the blatant violation of his country’s sovereignty.

Prime Minister visits KPT food street
KARACHI, Nov 30 (APP): Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani,
along with Governor Sindh, Dr Ishrat ul Ibad Khan, Minister for Ports
and Shipping Senator Babar Khan Ghauri visited the KPT Food Street and
appreciated the decor, infrastructure and the quality of food available at the
Food Street.
A Karachi Port Trust (KPT) statement on Wednesday said that the Prime Minister lauded the standard maintained at the KPT Food Street and said that such world class standard food street would uplift the soft image of Pakistan.
It reflects on the Asian culture we have and on the friendly nature of the nation, he added.

PM Gilani seeks increase in Pak-UAE business ties
KARACHI, Nov 30 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has stressed the need for an increase in interaction between the business communities of Pakistan and UAE to boost trade ties.
“I direct Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Ministry of Commerce to facilitate the visits by the business delegations of both the countries,” he said while addressing the dinner-reception in honour of the visiting UAE delegates at Governor House Wednesday night.
He said the Pakistan is a land of vast opportunities and investment with a promise of good profit return. “We would extend all possible facilitation to the UAE investors and the exhibition of UAE products in the economic hub of the country is a milestone in strengthening the bonds between the respective business communities.
